Compatible Transmission for 90 F150 ?

Hi all. My dad has an 90 F150 he uses very rarely just around town. The tranny went out on it last week and we are trying to replace it with a junkyard tranny. It had overdrive so im assuming its the e40d?
I have read a little and it seems that the 93 and up e40d's were actually better transmissions. Will the 93 and up fit in the 90 with no modifications?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

it could be an aod also. this would help you find out what tranny you need. you wont be able to put an aod in a truck that has a e4od tranny in it without doing alot of swapping and modding. the aod (stands for automatic overdrive) is not electronic therefore wont work for a truck with an e40d tranny. the e4od (electric 4 speed overdrive) requires a computer to control the shifting. the aod used pressure and a cable on your throttle body that controls your shifting. I could be wrong about how they shift, but i do know they wont swap out without modding.

Hmm. It has a button for the overdrive, does that help in determining what tranny i have?

Yes, that should be an E4OD. PRN(D)21, right? The AOD is PRN(D)D1. Any E4OD should bolt in except one out of a diesel or a Triton. Also, it has to be the same as what you have - 2wd or 4x4.

I don't know what electronic differences there may be between years and models that may make the swap difficult.

Look at the Trans code on the Vehicle ID sticker "E" is an E4OD

Ford changed the pinouts on the control harness at some point, I believe it was in 94. If that's the case then a 93 tranny should fit your truck. The 93 was an upgrade from a 90 but the really significant improvements came in 95 and that will not fit unless you want to cut and splice control wires.

This covers tranny identification and lists the changes in the trannies year by year

Well, new idea, thought i would run by you all. Just found a 95 f150 with the e40d tranny that has alot of front end damage but still runs and drives, and supposedly the transmission was rebuilt 20k ago. I can get the whole truck for 400 bucks. How hard would it be to integrate that transmission, and rear end into our 90 f150? (our rear end is almost shot as well...) The 95 is a 6ft bed and our 90 is an 8ft bed so hoping i could use the 90 driveshaft....

Easy swap or too much involved you think?

The tranny pinouts are different.
You might be able to cut and splice or not. You need pinout diagrams for both years to see how much work is involved.

If the engines are the same and they both use speed-density EFI, you might or might not be able to swap the entire powertrain harness from the donor truck, you'd need to look at the pinouts on the connector to the PCM to make certain.

Or you could swap everything (Engine, tranny, PCM and harness) from the 95 into your 90.

Whichever way you go it's probably a bigger project than you think.

I've read it isn't that big of a deal (and actually a better thing to do anyway) to splice the newer MLPS onto the older trucks.
