I've got a 96 f-150 and was going to put some tow hooks on the front of it. i am not quite sure where or how to mount them, could somebody tell me how to? thanks

 

u can mount them inside the front frame rails, but i wouldnt load them to hard u can tweak the frame. id add some sort of cross memebr up front or make a front reciever hitch. just dont mount them on the little brackets on the frame near the front...thats for the front sway bar and wont hold up.

 

Even though thats where I have mine mounted and have pulled off of them before, I would not tell anyone else to do it that way.

Best option- front receiver hitch or a frame mounted grille gaurd. I have a Warn Trans4mer on my 92' and it has been pulled off of many times without incident.

These are factory Ford eyes, and they attach with NO drilling/welding. The only permanent mod is to cut 4 straight slits in the plastic air dam & fold the tabs down. If the eyes are ever removed, the tabs can be folded back up.

 

Where would one find those? ebay? dealer? they look great.

 

I designed & built those brackets in the bottom corner of the pic for that truck I fixed for my nephew last month. I could probably make another painted set for $100+sh ($130+sh powdercoated), but you could make your own for a lot less if you have a hacksaw & a vise, and you know someone who can weld.

If you want me to supply the Ford towing eyes, I have a few decent cast iron sets for $50/pr+sh, one set of Aluminum for $60/pr+sh, and I'm thinking about getting some powdercoated which would be ~$20 more.

Will these hooks work on a 96 F 150? What about possible tweeking of the frame itself or is there an added brace you include with the tow points?

trying to build up a truck I just purhased.. It has potential just need some answers.. im a jeep person previously but I thought a full sized truck would be an interesting project

 

They'll work on anything you want to mount them to, but those brackets I made are specific to '92-96 ('97 >8500GVWR). This one didn't require brackets:



IDK what you mean by "tweeking of the frame". You're not gonna bend the frame with those nut plates - they're ~1/4 the thickness of the frame horn.

Just curious, would it even be possible to tweak the frame just from pulling the trucks own weight? Say you're out in the trails and give/need a tug. I have some loops slot like that I got off an OLD international dump truck and was going to mount them in that very same place. Then a buddy of mine said I shouldn't becuase it would tweak that frame. I mean it's not like I'm hanging the trucks full weight on them.

Rip the hook out of the frame? Yes, if you let an idiot ****** you with a cable or chain.
Bend the frame horn? Yes, with an idiot pulling off-angle & a REALLY good attachment to your frame.
Twist the entire frame structure? Not a chance.

I was not sure, its what I read about attaching tow hooks directly to the frame rails behind the bumper. Once you explained I believed you... Like I said in my email and in my post, I just got the F150, I don't know enough about them structurally so I asked the people who did. I am wanting to get these tow points from you steve, I am just trying to get the money for them. So sorry if I offended anyone by asking about frame "tweaking" bending, twisting.. whatever you call it. I am trying to retro fit this truck to do search and rescue ops.. if someone trails and slips.., and out here if you go over an embankment.. you are in a heap of trouble, I am going to need to be able to pull. If I get stuck, which is less likely, im gonna need a sturdy hook point. SO thank you steve for the clarification and I will try and contact you again about purchasing some hooks....
