Gas Gauge
Gas Gauge
I have a 90 F150 with a singular 18 or 19 gallon gas tank, I can't remember exactly. The thing is, when my fuel gauge goes to E, it only take about 11 gallons to fill er bak up. I'm scared to drive around with it on the E, but I know there should be 7 more gallons of gas in the tank. Anybody else have this problem? What would cause this? Is it in the gauge itself or is it the sending unit?
i've heard stories of the gauge going bad on these year trucks especially in the the area you're talking about. basically the gauge wears down somwhere about mid point so instead having some friction to hold it steady it slides up and down easier. yours may have worn down so much that is just goes with gravity. i bet if you hit a really big bump it'll bounce up. this is all just stuff i've heard of.
It's not gravity or friction; it's either a partially-sunken float, or a bent/wrong float arm, or a rusty sender. You can pull the pump assy., disassemble the sender, clean it, & reinstall it, but a new one is ~$80 and more reliable considering the effort necessary to get it out. Click my black Bronco in my sig & read the captions in the '90-96 Fuel System album.

Your fuel tanks will be very similar to these charts:

You left out "MAGIC"! Thanks for the images & info. So, the sender is not an integral part of the fuel pump and can be replaced separately.
Yeah, these are OE parts; not aftermarket (fuel line magnets, TB spacers, hydrogen generators...).
OE parts don't run on magic.

does anyone know where do get the fuel level/float i typed in the part number from the link into fords site and nothing.and autozone and advance sell their sending units without the float. i have a 91 reg cab with the 8ft bed. only have the rear tank. its a 18 gallon tank from what i have read on autozones site

Darn, I've been looking for a Magnetic hydrogen generating TB spacer too!
I had a 72' Maverick. I-6, 3 on tree. Could not kill that thing! Forgot all about it til you mentioned it! Always thought it replaces the Falon, my personal Fav. (bullet proof/ engine anyway)

Hi I'm new to these forums because I just got an F150. I have a similar problem with my 88 F150 except I have dual tanks on it. I only use the front tank because the previous owner put all sorts of preservatives (stabil, water-out, etc) in it because he didn't drive very often. Anyways, my issue is that I actually have what I like to call a "floating gas needle" in my gague cluster. It constantly stays past the full line on the gague, but whenever I come to a stop or start slowing down then the needle falls down to about half a tank or empty, but then jumps right back up past full. Would this be because of the fuel sending unit in the tank? Or do I need to look elswhere.
My 93 had the same probably a while back after I replaced my tank, I found out it was the fuel pump cables were not connecting all the way so I dropped the tank a little and put all the cables together with eachother and it worked afterwords You might have to same problem I don't know though.
It could be your wires are getting pinched by the tank, Mine did the same thing I have a 93 and it did the same thing after I put a new gas tank and fuel pump in it Ended up to be the wiring got pinched out of place and bumped off connection.
