Vibration in Steering Wheel on braking
I have an interesting and so far difficult to solve problem. I just purchased a 1995 F-150 two wheel drive, long-bed with the 300 inline six and the 5 speed manual transmission with 93,000 miles on the truck. When I applied moderate to heavy braking the steering wheel moved up and down, not side to side, violently. I had a 1984 F-150 two wheel drive, long-bed with the 300 inline six and the 4 speed transmission with 138,000 miles on the truck and it did the same thing. ( Never tried to fix the problem with the 1984 )
So far I replaced the front rotors, brake pads, front wheel bearings and shocks all around. The problem is a lot less severe, but it is still there. It is worse with the clutch pushed in, it is hardly noticeable with the clutch out and in gear. The tires are in balance with no vibration or shimmy in the steering wheel up to 70+ mph.
Scratching my head on this one.
Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks
Michael

PumperMike, I had a similar problem with my ranger. I was told that it was the brake rotors and that it would be fine after having them turned. After having them turned I still had the shakes. I had a u-joint go bad, very bad, truck shook so bad I had to do 30 to get home. After changing the joints I noticed a funny thing, the first time I out on the brakes the shakes were gone! I had these shakes for 60k miles. Just a thought.

Replaced U-Joints: Problem still there. U-joints were shot anyway.
Replaced brake drums and brake lining. Fixed problem almost.
Little bit of pulsation in brake pedal sometimes.
Best Regards
Michael

Is there movement up and down or shaking up and down? I have a 5spd and the whole column would move because the brakcket broke under the dash that holds it up. It was caused from the pressure applied to the brake, and mainly the clutch. Both pedals are attatched under the dash along with the steering column. Pushing in both would increase the force on it, lowering the column. Not fixing the support bracket will cause you a lot of problems, including dash movement and noise. Mine caused my clutch mastercylinder to go bad because it bent the push rod in the firewall. If it is not that, remove the radiator cap and drive a new truck under it.

Actually, I never would have thought of that as a source of the problem, but it makes perfect sense. Now I'm curious!
Take care,

Thats a good one too! Just thought I would add, my column sagged and would bounce slightly over bumps. It really made my change rattle in the ash tray. I might think the support could be broken in many peoples trucks. I could tell something was because the hole column would move up if you picked up on it, and the dash would fall when I applied the clutch.
