Is my mechanic ripping me off?
I have an '88 F-150 and the clutch has gone out on me. The mechanic said it will be about 920$ to get it fixed!!
260$ - clutch kit (pressure plate, new bearings, resurfice fly wheel)
170$ - slave cylinder
102$ - master cylinder
40$ - bleeding and hosing
300$ for labor
260$ for the clutch sounds high. One of my friends said he can get me a new one for 90$, which sounds too low.
The truck is undrivable and currently it will cost more to fix it than its worth.
Any input?
Thanks to all that reply!!

Hi Don,
Those numbers aren't too far out of line, remember that in that $260 price is the resurfacing of the flywheel, etc., whereas the price you got of $90 was I'm sure just for the clutch lining.
You may or may not need all new master cylinder & slave cylinder, and those parts add a good bit to the cost. I can't tell you if yours are OK to still use or not, but they may not need replacing, and this mechanic is just replacing *everything*. Then again, it may need it, there's no way for us to know from here, and your mechanic may in fact be doing a very good job. Ask your mechanic about this, if those master & slave cylinders are actually leaking, etc.
Good luck!
