New here...question about 300 inline 6
Hello, I have a 1992 F-150 strip model 4x2 truck with the 4.9L engine and AOD trans. Is there anything I can do to increase the pep? Obviously torque is not the problem, and I know it's not a revver, but there has to be little things that can help. Thanks.

Hi 99SH,
Welcome to F-150 Online!
There are a fair number of people here with the "Big 6", and it's a great engine.
There are things you can do to improve it's performance, certainly, and I would suggest starting off with relatively inexpensive bolt-ons.
The Superchip that we market adds 15 horsepower and 31 lbs.ft/ of torque to your 4.9 engine. It does requrie the use of premium gas, as the engine is specifically re-tuned for the use of premium gas, and that is how we get the additional power and a little bit better gas mileage as well.
Next, you can reduce restriction on the intake side, using an airbox elimination kit, like the K&N FIPK kit that is sold right here in the F-150 Online store, called the Digital Marketplace. You can access the store simply by clicking on the link on the left side of your screen that says "Online Store"
And last, you can also reduce restriction on the exhaust side, using a good cat-back exhaust system. They too are available in the Online Store here.
Those 3 mods, the Superchip, the intake & the exhaust, are generally the top 3 best "bang-for-the-buck" mods for these computer-controlled trucks. Once you have all 3 of them done, you may not need any more, but you can decide yourself at that point, of course.
The Superchip is available from us, we have an online ordering system right here on F-150 online and the link to access it is just below in my signature line. We offer a special discount to F-150 Online participants.
If you'd just like to be able to call and talk to someone about your vehicle and what you'd like to be able to do with it, please feel free to give us a shout, we'll be happy to help.
Id' like to leave you with one last thought...those 4.9's can live very long service lives, upwards of 250,000 miles if maintained properly. One thing that is a must, is to change your oil every 3000 miles, as the 4.9 tends to build up sludge if the oil isn't changed frequently.
Best of luck with your truck,

Hey Mike, slow up on the responses!! Nice to see you visit the "old" truck forums every once in a while!
99SH, I would have to agree with Mike on his answers to how to "pep up" this engine. I have done each that he is referring to. I also added a hotter coil and better wires to try and smooth things out a bit. The mods that I did definitely make a noticable difference. My biggest downfall on my truck is a 2.73 rear end ratio, but we won't get into the story there! My only suggestion when it comes to buying these products is shop around! I have found up to a $100 difference between local retailers and ordering off of the net for such things as a cat-back exhaust system!! People here seem to support Gibson, Jardine, and Flowmaster quite a bit, although there are others. As you can see in my profile I have the Gibson 3" side swept, I am happy with it, but at times wish it had a deeper tone to it. It sounds very close to stock. Well, that's about all I have to say, keep us posted as to what you do to your truck and enjoy!!

Since you have a 4.9,I don't think your tranny is an AOD, it should be an E40D, which is a bunch stronger. Check your tag on the driver's door jamb. Under transmission it should read "E" for the E40D, I think the AOD was "T" and the AOD-E was "U". Making sure will save you some hassles if you try to upgrade it.
And the Gear Guy is right, get a steeper ratio. My 4.9 is a stone with the 3.08s, but I've got a set of FMS 3.73s ready to install. Go for at least 3.55s unless you upsize tires, then go bigger as req'd.

I couldn't find anything in the online store. 94 F-150, where did you get your stuff? How much more acceleration does your truck have?

Hey 99SH,
There are a number of items that are not listed in the online store but that they still carry and have access to, so I would just call Roger Lemere directly for your intake & exhaust mods. He's the gentleman that runs the Online Store here, in partnership with Steve Eppinger, the Webmaster here at F-150 Online. You can reach Roger Lemere at: (916) 361-2510.

99SH,
Well, you have a very diffucult job on this one. I use to have a 95 4.9 and I did almost everything to it that could be done.
First I would go with a chip on your truck that will make a pretty good difrence. Next what I did to my truck when I had it was an ignition system, crane cans has an ignition system that installs very easily or you could go with a jacobs (which would be a little better than the crane). After that I did the K&N FIPK, and last there was the cat-back exhaust. I could never find anyone who could help me anymore than that. I hope this helps.
