96 gas mileage
I have a 96 ext cab f-150 with a 302 and a 3.55 rear end. I am getting about 15-16 miles per gallon. It does not seem to matter if it is city or highway. Is this normal? If not any suggestions.
I have nearly the same truck. Mine is a reg cab 4x4, auto - same rear end and motor. I do have dual exhaust, but bone stock other than that. I get about 16-17 city, 20-22 highway(have gotten as high as 23). I never dreamed it would be that good. When pulling and/or hauling a camper on highway mileage is about the same as city. Your city seems about right on - highway seems low though.
Hey Primetime, My truck is esactly like what you have 96 F150 reg cab 4x4,302,auto. I can't get any more than 16 highway out of mine. It has 87k on it, I am not hard on it either. Do you have the 4R70W trans? Is it shifting hard between 1st and 2nd?
Thanks,
Rich

From what I've heard and seen, stock mass air 2wd 302's avg around 16. Speed Density usually gets a bit better. I have a 1989 4x4 that has the AOD and 3.55 gears, and it has gotten 16 best. I would be very happy if I got 22 someday.
I wish they were all the same. I get 9-11 mpg everywhere with my 92 4X4 AOD. I can't even use the OD cause the engine doesn't have the power to push the truck along with 31 in tires and 3.55s.

My 1993 F-150 2wd with a 302/E40d/3.55 gears has more than enough power, and avgs about 20mpg. I have gotten close to 23 several times.

Rich, I do have that tranny, and 99,000 miles so far
Shifting is fine, but seems sluggish when I step on it rolling. It seems like the truck wants to stay in gear too long, then shift into 1st - that shift is hard, but otherwise it is fine.
