AOD tranny
I have a 92 4x4 302 with AOD 31x10.5x15 tires and 3.55 gears in the rear. It runs well in Drive on the highway. In OD on flat highway driving I can sometims get 60(if there was a hill before flat ground) but most of the time it just decelerates to the point i have to kick it down into D because it can't hold the speed limit. I can't believe that the 302 doesn't have enoug power to push this truck along. I was thinking of going to specified tire size once these wear out but I can't see tire size affecting power that much!! Has anyone ever had or have this situation and is there something wrong with my truck? Thanks in advance for your replies

Oh, it does have enough power to push your truck. What kind of mileage are you getting?
I have a 89 302/AOD 4x4 with 31's and I can keep up with the best. Its is considerably slower than my 93 302 is. My tranny shifts in and out of 4th all the time on the highway. I finally gave up and use D all the time, except some really flat land. I have had the truck to 90 with little probs.

I don't know what the problem is. I have a '90 4x4 AOD, 302, with 4.10 gears. It has a few mods, but nothing major. I've gotten up to 90 with absolutely no problems in OD, and my truck has almost 90k miles on it. I could probably go faster, too, but as we all know, the speedometer only goes up to 85. And I have 31's on it also. Sometimes my tranny shifts down to 3rd more often than I'd like, but on warm days I can get great acceleration in OD from 55-85 mph, with little or no strain on the engine whatesoever. It's the weirdest thing, I'll be accelerating from 55 to about 70 in od, and my tach. needle barely moves a mm. I would have something checked out, or add a few mods. or something. Unless you're approaching your third time around on the odometer, you shouldn't have any problem with 60 mph in od.

Ive got 33's with the same tranny and 3.55's while it is much less painful in d mine will get to 90 or 100 with no prob in od.

Performance accesories 3" body lift, 33x12.50 sport kings on 15x10 chrome mod rims. Better built diamond plate toolbox. Aiwa cd player with JBL amp to two 6-1/2's and two 10" subs in boxes. NEW: Ford the best never rest floor mats (pretty sharp) Best mod to date: taking off the huge egr hood deflector.

It has 85K miles on it. I'm getting about 10 miles to the gallon. I do agree that it has a really tall overdrive. There is 1000 rpm difference when it shifts. The engine probably has a hard time making the horsepower at that low RPM. This truck gets 10 miles to the gallon no matter what. I can be towing 1000 lbs or nothing. I think I better get some mods done. I'll probably start with headers.

I've got almost the same setup as you do on my SuperCab, and it just turned over to 100k. I get about 12 mpg city and 15 mpg country. Overdrive shift point is not too hot with the 31's and the 3.55 rear end. The truck starts to slow from 60 at the start of an average hill, but if I'm up at about 65-70, I can clear most hills. I have noticed that the cruise control does not do a very good job of downshifting at the bottom of a hill - the truck usually will slow nearly to 55 before shifting.
You may want to check things like the ignition (wires, coils, plugs), fuel injection (dirty?), emissions systems (plugged?), etc. If you're only getting 10 mpg something's fishy. Although the 302 may not be the strongest engine, it's pretty spunky.

I always wondered if a equilly equipped AOD truck would get worse or better mileage than a E40d counterpart. from the people I know, the AOD gets worse mileage, probably because of the different shift patterns, but that may not be so.
Thanks for your insight. I'll probably start putting some mods on the truck soon. Everything is stock. I do suspect the cats being plugged but that's a different story. I'll probably start by cleaning the fuel injectors and adding duals and see what that does. Thanks
