Help Fixing Speedometer in 1989 4.9

Hello,
I just purchased a 1989, and the speedometer does not work. All of the other gages work perfectly, just not the speedo. IM assuming that the cable needs to be replaced and possibly a sensor? I have not made this repair in the past so and help would be great.

Although I'm not sure about your '89... but in my '93 when my speedo quit working I had to replace the sensor, which is in the top of the rear end housing. It took me about 5 minutes and only cost me about $8

Thanks for the heads up Jeff. Anyone know of a place that shows a picture of the area I need to be looking at. Like I said before I have never worked on anything but an engine and radiator. Thanks!

If your '89 is like my '93 the sensor is on top of the differential housing on the driveshaft side of the housing.... did that help?

Yes it helped. Ive got a bit of rust around mine, was yours hard to do? Im assuming its a male end running from the speedo to the female end on the housing.

Mine isn't mechanical, it's an electrical sensor. There's only one bolt that holds it in. It only took me about 5 minutes to change it. Is yours mechanical?

I just tried to change mine with part uss311 sensor from napa. The part seems to be the correct width but too long. Any idea what part number you used? i took the old sensor out, and it seems to have been damaged, so im fairly sue this is my fix.

I actually got mine at a local Ford dealer.

That ABS sensor on the rear axle has nothing to do with your pre-'92 speedo. Look at the cable from the tailhousing of the trans/t-case going up thru the floor near the firewall below the steering column. You can pull the VSS out of the tailhousing & inspect the plastic gear. If the gear appears worn or damaged, you need to replace BOTH gears - the driven gear (on the VSS) & the drive gear (inside the tailhousing).
