It's a "4R70W", which means 4 forward gears, Rear-wheel-drive, 700 lb-ft of torque, & Wide-ratio gearset.
There's no way anyone can guess why it "seems" harsh to you, IF there's anything wrong with it, or how much a shop in your area might charge you. Take it to a shop you trust, and get a technician to test-drive it with you.

Anyway, it is hard to tell with no other info other than "it shifts hard". That can be caused by literally dozens of unique problems. Anything as simple as some old, bad fluid, not enough fluid, pump going, bearings going, anything.
Agree with Steve. Go to a reputable transmission shop(avoid "do-it-all" centers for major repairs) and get a mechanic to drive the truck. I doubt you're the first person he'll seen with a hard shifting tranny.
Sorry we can't be a lot of help, but you're not giving us a lot of info to go on. Any codes being thrown(more specifically on your truck is the O/D light blinking during driving)?
