Relays

I am new to the forum which has been a great resource for me, thank you all. I recently purchased a 92 F150 XLT 2wd 302 with 100k. So far I love it. IT is not without its flaws though. SO far I have replaced the supply hose for the pwr steering pump, the air pump hose to the cat and patched a hole to the front tank. I am still on my quest to flush out the bugs before I start to make any performance changes. I still have a wiper issues, hazard light and pwr door lock problems. I am pretty sure the wiper issue is the relay but I will ask anyway. When I use the intermittent it will occasionally stop in the middle of the windscreen but most of the time just operate as if it was in first position. I also have to stop the wipers as the come to the bottom of the dash manually. When I use the squirters I can not shut off the wipers unless I shut the truck off or pull the fuse. Not bad now but will suck in the winter.

I want to see if anyone has any other ideas or has seen this before.

I will post the hazards later, in short they don't come on and not the fuse.

George

Howdy and welcome,

Very common for the multifunction switch to fail. Not to hard to replace and I think 50bucks at napa. The hazard switch is known to collect dirt on top of the wheel and stop working.

There are no relays in any of those systems.

Ok so no relays, What is the box behind th kick panel on the pass side. I here that click when the wipers are on. Is that the multifuncion switch?

Thank you both.

George

Found the MFS. I will start there. based on both problems it would appear that that is the culprit.

The "clicking" noise is coming from your wiper control module it should be located behind your glove box. Take your glove box assembly out and cleen the contacts on your WCM. If that doesn't work you would probably have better luck finding one in a junk yard. Mine went out and I couldn't find one anywhere in a parts store and the dealership wants and arm and a leg for anything.

If the MFS tests good, go to the NEXT diagram and test the wiper motor. If that's good, then it's probably the WCM. If you can't find one at a reasonable price, e-mail me. I have one.

Ok so I went to check the MFS and when I pulled the switch while the wipers were on int, I was moving the wires just to check for shorts. Right away the wcm was clicking on and off the more I moved so off to the parts store. One MFS later I still am no closer. I still am having the same issues so I checked to motor. I didn't do a huge shack down but it appears to be fine. SO that leads me to the WCM.

To recap my problem. I can use my wipers however when I shut them off they stop where they are. Also when I hit the washer the wipers will not stop until I cut power to the WCM through the fuse box or killing the engine.

Oh and I still do not have working flashers. I think that is the alarm though because the pwr door lock switch doesn't work but the remote does. That is going to fun figuring someone else's wiring mess.

Oh ya, the p/o of my truck installed a remote door lock/engine start thing in it. Works fine, but there are wires friggen EVERYWHERE under the dash, and the pull-out ashtray outlet shorts out and pops the fuse whenever you move it. Most of the time I can't figure out my own wiring messes let alone somebody else's.

If the MFS is fine and the motor itself fine(it obviously is, otherwise the blades wouldn't move at all) then the wiper module is the only thing left.

Check junkyards. Any American car junkyard will have it's share of old trucks you can plunder. Stealerships will charge you to special order it, make you pay for shipping, and then jack the price 500%, turning a $20 part into $150.

There are only ~4 components to the wiper system: motor, WCM, MFS, & wiring. You said the WCM went crazy when you wiggled the MFS wires - they're known to be a problem on columns that get tilted fully down. Are you sure they're still in that top connector?
