air pump delete
My uncle was telling me about deleting the airpump/smog pump on his 92 mustang 5.0. and i was wondering about doing the same on my 94 with the 300. what goes along with that and what the pump does. I dont have a yearly smog check up in the hick state of south dakota so that wont be a problem. but any help or information would be very appreciated. thanks Jake.
Well Jake, my recommendation is, if you aren't having trouble with your Smog pump, I'd leave it alone. It helps extend the life of your cat, it helps keep the air cleaner, and it saps very, very little power. At different times of engine operation, it will pump fresh air either (a) to the cat, (b) to the exhaust ports in heads, or (c) to a bypass muffler in the engine bay. My understanding is it does this to increase O2 in the exhaust stream & help unburned gas oxidize more fully & it helps the cat warm up quicker.
Having said that, I had 3 smog pump failures in less than 2 years so I eliminated mine completely by simply bypassing it with a shorter belt & installing a slightly larger idler pulley. It caused me no driveability problems at all, but it also did not improve the operation of my 351w. It just eliminated that terrible racket from a dying vane-type smog pump. Removing it and its plumbing freed up a tremendous amount of space on the right engine bank making plugs a lot easier to access. But you have to plug both the port to the heads and the line to the cat (or at least I did). The TAB & TAD (AIRB & AIRD in FoMoCo manual) can go as well as the tubing, one-way valves, & vacuum lines. Theres a lot of junk tied to the smog pump.
In short, it's pretty easy to do, but it isn't real eco-friendly (Al Gore will be ticked!)

Well, you could plum the output lines of the air pump into your intake and make a N**er rigged super charger. Has anyone tried that?
If my air pump EVER gives me any problems i'm not going to spend money to fix the darned thing i'm just going to buy a shorter belt
If it wasn't against the law to not have cats we could all buy trucks that came stock with a good sounding exhaust system. Not to mention the truck itself would be cheaper, too

Shouldn't that be "stooper"? That's the dumbest post I've read in a long time.

what size belt did you end up using
would a 302/ 351 have the same belt combination
i have a 97 f250 it is the same style as like a 95etc..
my smog pump went bad, and for hte time being, i need a shorter belt
what size belt are you guys using?

Cats need catalyst oxgen to burn.
If you disconnected your air pump, the soot is just building up in your cat.
It won't burn without clean air being pumped in.
Gonna stop up that new cat.
