i have a 96 with the 302 and auto.....i am wanting to replace the stock exhaust...it HAS to be killing some of my gas mileage and power...there are 2 cats, a muffler and i guess a resonator on there....i live in oklahoma so we dont have emissions here...i want to get rid of the cats and put a flowmaster on the truck.....does any company make a crossover pipe that deletes the cats? i noticed that they make them for the chevy pickups....i could have an exhaust shop do it but i would rather have one already made so i could bolt it in...

any help would be great

I don't think anyone makes anything pre-bent that will bolt in and bypass the cats. Sounds like a custom job, but shouldn't be too expensive. It should sound cool, and possibly net you a few HP , but unless the cats are bad, I'm not thinkin you'll notice major fuel mileage improvements. Did you get a chip tuner it yet? There's your fuel mileage getter.

 

I am thinking about getting rid of my stock cats and runnig a high flow cat. I would just get rid out cats but i do care car about emissions.

A few things to consider:
1) A '96 has a post-cat HEGO sensor. If you remove the cats, it will throw error codes and light up the MIL. If you trash the cats, you'll need to buy a MIL eliminator as well.
2) If the cats aren't clogged, they cost you very, very little in the way of performance, certainly less than 5 HP. If they are clogged, replace them with a high flow version and they will cost you absolutely no HP.
3) It is illegal to remove your cats. The law may not currently be enforced where you live, but it's only a matter of time until it is. There's little point in cutting them off if you're only going to have to weld them back on in a year r two.
4) If you breathe air, why wouldn't you want to keep it as clean as possible?

Look into a Catco or Bassani replacement Y-pipe. You can get them with or without cats.

 

Amen brother. We don't have emissions here but just a matter of time as Memphis just next door already is and lots of folks are busted. Besides if it don't hurt the performance and keeps the air clean its a no brainier. I would got the custom route with a reputable shop and have a quality muffler WELDED in to get the sound you want and stay legal. Cops and deputy's don't want to right someone up cause the neighbors complained. I want a little more rumble my self.

 

I found a test by Super Ford in May 1996 where they tested a bunch of bolt-on stuff on a stock 5.0 Mustang. No real surprises. The biggest gain, by far, was the GT-40 aluminum heads. Good gains from gutting the air silencer and from adding both underdrive pulleys and 1.7 roller rockers. Replacing the cats with off-road pipes netted only 5.5 HP, hardly worth the time, effort or the potential liabilities and hassles.
