picking a: Fuel Tank selector valvle (87 f150 dual tank, 6 cyl)

Hi,

Am looking to buy a new one for an 87 F 150 6cyl with dual tanks.... I've posted a link below for a parts site is giving me several parts to choose from even given my vehicle specific search. It is my understanding that I will need a "6 port swith", so I believe that rules on the real cheap ones.....

Does anyone have any experience in picking which 6 port to buy??? I am planning to go with the Neihoff (about $62) unless there is a reason not to????

Feedback please.... see:

edited b/c I typed wrong year/decade!!!! OOPS.

motor driver?

Another question:

The most expensive one shown (one of the AC Delco - 120$), is listed as "Motor Driven" and also shows what appears to be a bunch of wires in the picture. Can anyone explain what this means and how it relates to my specific needs/application?

Do you mean pre 97?

The motor driven one mounts on the frame. It has a motor to switch the valve for the fuel source to the hi-pressure pump. The wires power the motor to switch the valve/switch and the switch part switches the fuel gauges. It is used on the 87 vans and mid 80's trucks with the 460 engines. It is also used on all 1985 and 1986 F150's.
A 1987 with a small V-8 does not use it.

Here is a diagram of it: http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g9...sel140-302.gif

Your truck does not use any of the items in the URL.

Here is a fuel diagram of your system.

subford,

Thanks for your posts. I know you really know your stuff and I have read and valued many of your posts (and diagrams) while searching this site. I will take your word that none of these part (fuel selectors) are what I need. However, I am now really at a loss now, as these are the types that come up on virtually every parts site I visit (also, similar results at parts houses when I go in person) - based on my specific year, make, model input.

Would you be able to give me a model #, or a url to the one that I need to buy?

Just reread your posts..... I do not know if this impacts your answer, but you reference a 1987 V8, I have a 1987 with the straight 6 cyl.

Do you need the dashboard mounted selector switch or do you need the selector valve itself?

I need the selector valve... if you click on the url link in one of my earlier posts - you'll see all of the supposedly compatible selectors available (however, i know if has to be a 6 port, so disregard the 3 ports shown).

No, a straight 6 cyl. is the same as the small V8's. I was trying to set them apart from the 460 and the Diesels.

OK, your going to have to help us out here, looking under your truck on the frame near the drivers door do you see something that looks like this?

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g9...Fuel/dfres.gif

If not then it is the bottom one in the URL for Advance that you posted.

Let us know what you find.

Also if it looks like the one in this URL will not find it at an auto parts store, only at Ford (if you are lucky).

Truck isn't at my house right now, but I will try to go take a look.

Wonder if Ford could tell me based on the VIN... probably not - but I think I'll call and check.

Thanks

SUB,

It was the canister/resevoir type (like diagram, mechanical.. and NOT like the ones in the URL link).... went to the dealer (not all local dealers stocked it). Will have it put in this week and will report back with results.

Thanks for the help.

Make sure and get the tubing right hehe! It looks like you don't have a return style setup, but I'll tell you my horror story anyway *grin*

I got a new 6 hose valve installed (I have the 460) and I believe they reversed a hose (or maybe the new one was defective) because when I had it set to the front tank, the return was going to the rear tank, and would overflow it. Took over $100 in gas before that was figured out

He has return lines from the FPR and his selector valve route the fuel to the right tank (sometimes).
