Truck whining under acceleration HELP!

My truck is making a whining noise under acceleration. It is a 1990 F250 with a 351 and an auto transmission. It sounds EXACTLY like a turbo diesel. That is the only way I know to describe the noise. Just like a turbo spooling up. Any idea what could be causing this? It doesn't do it when it is in neutral, so maybe it is the transmission. I dunno. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Hunter

if it's hot there then it's the fan clutch engauged trying to cool the engine, it will go away

It is hot here, but I have a low temp thermostat and the engine doesn't get very warm. I wouldn't figure the fan would come on unless the engine was getting too hot. I hope you are right though.

try it in the morning, should be fine, also that noise goes away with some air flow on the fan

I think you are right beckerjs. It doesn't do it all the time. I am planning on replacing the stock fan with an electric fan anyway, I think that would take care of it.

Thanks,
Hunter
