1990 I6 valve chatter after oil change
Hello, first post. I've got a 1990 F-150 w/ a I6. I bought it a couple of months ago with only 52000 original miles on it. The oil had been changed before I owned it, I could tell by the color. When I went to change the oil, I noticed the filter was a Fram ph3614. I double checked the filter needed and it was supposed to be a ph8a. Got the correct filter, installed said filter, installed new oil, started the engine. High rev, kicks down, a low valve chatter was happily making its presence known. Not a good feeling. The oil was 10-30, and the filter is correct also. Has anyone had this problem as well? By the way, I had alot of fun reading posts before I got around to adding my own. Well, that's it for now, Peace, Dave.
I have no direct answer, but have you done research to see if maybe the "wrong" filter is actually the correct filter?
Maybe something was wrong and people realized a different filter worked better?
good luck

Hello Lumadar, Thanks for the reply. Yes, I did google that filter and I got info on motorcycles, Buicks, and lawn-mowers. (Don't ask) I also read alot where people don't like Fram, and that's scary because I've always liked Fram, and never had a problem with those filters. I'm probably going to change the filter again, just in case, and if that does'nt work, maybe I will go back to the 3614. Well, that's it for now, Peace, Dave.
Is the clatter only at initial startup than goes away or does it persist?
If it goes away after a few seconds, then the drain back check in the Fram POS isn't working. If it persists, you have other problems.
Get a Motorcraft, Wix or Purolator. Good luck.

Hello, Humboldt, that seems to be the opinion of alot of people. I geuss I don't use Fram anymore. (If that's the cause). StrangeRanger, the chatter does go away after a short while of warm-up, so I'm going to change the filter out this Saturday. I thank you all for your comments, I hope to talk to you again soon. Peace, Dave.
Well, I replaced the filter today, with a Motorcraft, and the chatter is still there. Due to finances at the moment, Lucasoil may be the quick fix. The noise isn't extremely loud, it's just something I noticed right after start-up at the oil change. Perhaps it was there all along and I just noticed it because I was listening for odd noise after the oil change. (Or so I keep telling myself) My 2nd consolation is that the service code on the new oil was (I believe) SM. The sticker on the truck calls for SG. I think that code changes constantly anyway, though, so that may be cold comfort. Maybe next week I'll flush out the oil and replace that. Thanks for the replies, I'll talk to you again soon. Peace, Dave.

Give it a day, and see if the noise is still there. Your description and my experience tells me it was caused by the filter, and will go away soon if you installed the correct one this time.
Hey PKRWUD, I'm hoping, man, believe me. Like I said, the noise isn't obnoxious, but I still don't like it being there. By the way, there's some funny pics in the Rice Haters Club. Thanks for the reply, Peace, Dave.
Hey PKRWUD, noise is still there, and I really have'nt played with it. I am, however, debating wether or not it's noise from the alternator. (bearings?) I'm getting some funky fluctuations on the gauge, but I just don't know. Still seems too coincedental to have started right after the oil change. Thanks for the reply, sorry for the delay in re-posting, I have'nt been on-line for a bit. Talk to you later, Peace, Dave.
Hello Humboldt, it's got one of those stupid serpentine belts. I hate them things, if it goes, you lose everything. Of course, there is always the radio fix. Turn up the radio loud enough, what noise? Thanks for the suggestion. Peace, Dave.
