I purchased my 95 less then a year ago. Currently has around 145,000 miles on it. Have replaced the brakes already, but that is it so far. It's a great truck and I'd like to keep it around for quite awhile, so any recommendations for preventive maintainence? I change oil and filters religiously every 3k - 4k. I have noticed that the transmission shifts a little hard when putting it into either drive or reverse, any suggestions on this.

So far I've gotten between 13 and 14 mpg which from what I hear is pretty good for a 5.8L.

Great milage too. Fuel filter is pretty easy, need a line tool though. Plugs, wires, cap and rotar is a good hour that will help performance and maybe a MPG. I like the plane motorcraft stuff.

Thanks for the info and I sure am glad I came across this forum. Seems to be a good group of knowledgable people here. I never considered purchasing Motorcraft products until I read a lot about them in this forum. I also used to use Fram filters until I read that article on how they use cardbaord! Never gonna use them again!

Any idea on the hard shifting?

 

Welcome to the forum and congrats on on the new truck. I have a 95 Scab Flareside with the 5.8, got it last fall with 111K on the OD, love the thing.

When you say hard shifting, I'm guessing you mean a clunk of sorts, if that's it, probably some slop if the rear diff, a lot of older Fords have it, how serious it is you'll have to judge, mine is really only annoying when towing a trailer with inertial brakes.

 

flame me to hell, but the pre 97 F-150's were the best of the lot, check bands in the tranny or u jionts new sparky's will help out a lot, as well as a a good set of plug wires, the 351W is so easy to work on..

 

Well. you already have the most important knowledge about PM products out there. Fram products are crap, no matter what your are applying them to or what color the damn box is. Anyone who disagrees with this is an idiot, it has been proven.

The ABSOLUTE BEST THING you can do to prolong the life of that transmission is to install a remote cooler and filter kit. You can do it for under $100 and it will be a good investment.

Coolers are for auto trannys, you're fine with the manual. But it sounds like a tune up is in order, I'm getting 16+ (regular) with an automatic, a manual should get higher depending on your gearing.

 

A 1995 F-150 with a 5.8 and a manual tranny? Something there isn't quite right. Ford didn't offer a manual tranny with the 5.8 in a '95 F-150. Are you certain that it's a 5.8?

 

Yeah, only way to have a five speed manual in the half ton trucks was with the 4.9 or 5.0. Unless one was swapped in.

And your right kretinus for these years, but fyi the superdutys with the ZF6 have a cooler and pump to move the fluid.

Clunk when shifting: check your u-joints. Common problem at this age.

 

I wasn't aware heat was even an issue in a manual transmission, go figure.

 

I wouldn't think it matters too much what type of tranny you have as far as U joints are concerned. (Adrian will correct me on this if I'm wrong). They only last so long either way. Good news is they run about $11 at auto zone, and you can replace them yourself very easily. Check it out in your Chilton's.
