locker or limited slip

locker or limited slip

i am getting my gears changed to 4.10s in my 93 150. it has 4" lift and 33x12.5 tires 4x4 I6 5 speed. i am not sure what i should get put in locker or limited slip. the mechanic i talked to get the work done suggested that i get a eaton limited slip over a locker. and my buddy who is also a mechanic tells me to get a locker for the rear and a tru trac for the front. i only offroad a few times a year, and its not hardcore but its not sally stuff. the majority of my driving is at highway speeds about 60mph. and some city driving. my buddy says that the limited slips will burn out and are not good. the mechanic im taking it to says to get limited slips and you wont want lockers cause you do majority city driving and lockers arent good for that. i also here that with a locker in the rear that when turning it can clunk and possibly get wheel hop, does this happen and potentially wreck stuff, or will it just be something i can get used to and not worry bout it? would it be worth spending the extra couple hundred on the lockers rather than the limited slips?
also anyone know offhand what price differences are in the two?
any onther tips and info would be great, thanks.

Go with limited slips! Lockers (except electric or pneumatic) should only be run off road. If you use you're truck 80/20 on the road, get the LS. They do not burn up. That's why the factory uses them.

if you have a locker in the rear it will wear out your tires a lot faster too b/c every time you turn your tires will be going the same speed therefor one of them has to slip on the road

Yeah, thats cheap compared to replaceing a rear end every few months....

I run a Detroit in the rear of my Dodge. You can learn how to drive around corners without engaging the locker, as it engages when you give it some gas. If you can pony up the dough for an ARB, that would be the way to go.

has anyone used a auburn or a detroit trutrac? they are limited slips with gears instead of clutches that can wear out?

did you have increased tire wear with the detroit in your dodge? or other drivability issues

As long you coast or only give it very little gas through the turns the locker stays open. It did get a little squirly on the icy roads.

Limited slips can blow up if you put a lot of horsepower and torque (way more than stock) through them and they do have clutches that can wear out but they last quite a long time. Lockers can be harsh for street driving but i know people that run lockers front and rear on there daily drivers. It all depends on how much drivability you want to give up to gain more performance. I have a spool in the rear of my street driven drag truck and in the rear of my daily driver F-150, it chops the rear tires and you have to listen to them chirp around corners, it's also a little difficult to steer at low speeds like when pulling into a parking spot, however the traction offroad is incredible and i haven't had any mechanical problems with the stock rear end, even after several thousand miles of street driving with the spool.

limited slips wear out. I can't believe someone said they dont burn up. The problem with limited slips is they work but sometimes they don't work as much as you want it too. You might want to check into a Torsen 31 spline. The worm gears on these LS units work really well. No clutches to wear out. I've had one in my Mustang for years and it works really well. Of course this is for the rear only. In the front you can go with something like a pump activated locker.

A Detroit True Trac works on the same principle as a Torsen and They make a unit for the D44. It will work in the front with no problems or weird handling issues

i am going with the eaton limited slip front and rear. sounds like it should be good enough for my needs and the mechanic im using says i wont have any issues with them. so i'll see once i get it done, and i'll give an update then.

Ok, you're right... 215,000 mile on my LS and not a problem. Who knows how many more miles I get before it goes, but I'd pay for LS every 215,000 miles if I had to....

All depends on how there used. Also just because you don't have any problems with your rearend doesn't mean they are working 100%, usually when the clutches are worn they just will not lock up under heavy load leaving you with one wheel peel. I've rebuilt plenty of worn out limited slips, especially when they are used with oversized tires.

This something I've been curious about because it appears from driving my truck that the rear is lmited slip, you can feel it working under acceleration on gravel, snow etc, and works quite well, and front appears to a locker???

I can't seem to find any specifics on identifying what I actually have, I don't even know if the setup is stock.

How do you know exactly what you have?

Look at the rear axle tag. example. 2SL73A888D19

that would be a 2.73 gear ratio 8.8 inch rear limited slip.

look for the SL.
