4x4 Front Hub Change

I have a 1995 Ford F-150 4x4 With Manual Hubs I've never had a problem with them with just having to get out and lock them in when i needed to use it however due to a recent atv accident which left me disabled i am unable to get in and out just to lock them in.I'm not sure if they were factory or not because it has push button 4x4 in the cab but i would like to if any way possible get them changed to the auto locking hubs.So i was wondering how hard this would be to do or if it can be done at all.And if so what all would i need?

Thanks in advance.

Just leave them locked it wont hurt a thing. When you know you wont be needing 4x4 for a period of time unlock them there is no need to lock and unlock at every 4x4 shift.

no, your truck most likey came with auto hubs from the factory. if ya have 100 - 150k on the truck, chances are the auto's bit the bullet. chances are he replaced them with the manuals ase they are EXTREMELY expensive to have them put back in. when i blew out my autos i went to get the warn premiums. they are alot better than autos. the manuals were 300cdn, and autos were gonna cost like 800cdn. not worth it, considering if you put ur truck in 4x4 at all, they'll go again. as tuna said, if you know you'll need 4x4, leave em' locked, it won't do nuttin but kill gas milage, and you'll feel the axle rotating on the highway at speed. (i can in mine at least) but if your on the highway, leave em out, around town, leave em in, it won't hurt nothin. but sure they came auto from the factory, and i'm sure they were replaced with the manuals.
get better soon

If you are planning on driving from now on without ever getting out to lock them in you better put the auto's back on, I personally have warn manual premiums and love em. Driving with manual hubbs locked in does not make for a smoth ride. I have also heard that driving long distances with the front end lock is not good.
I bet some people floating around this board may still have the factory automatic set laying around after switching to manuals....I went and looked and I must have thrown mine old set away, otherwise I would have given them to you.

Allen,

Searching for stuff to find my auto hub types to remove them, I found that my '95 has auto hubs made by Warn. They were used in some trucks and 4 x4 vans. From my understanding they aren't cheap by any means.

There are also different locking nut systems. My truck has only a single axle nut, with a strange locking tab. Most I spoke with had the double locking nut setup. In some cases changing the hubs means also changing the locking nut setup.

If you rarely need the 4 x4 I would try ccnseven's approach, and have someone install them for you. I've never got around to swapping mine to manuals yet since I rarely use 4 x4. If you don't have any luck finding the autos let me know...... it might speed me in switching mine out if I know someone could use the old ones.

I think if you search a couple boards you could find some, hopefully free or just a couple bucks or shipping. Though they are expensive to buy new, with the problems they have with age I couldn't charge someone on a maybe, since knowing they work right now doesn't help you if they die a month later.

Just curious, what lift, tire setup does your truck have? ON my f 150 i still have the factory auto hubs, my truck has 164k on it, but one thing i have to ask about, when i engage it on the floor, it will only kick in if i come to a complete stop, and at that sometimes it will CLUNK real loud when taking off after i engage them..

4x4 Manual Hubs

Sorry guys maybe i wasnt clear about the situation here When i purchased the truck it had factory manual hubs but the left one didnt work so i putchased some selectro premium hubs off ebay and it fixed the 4x4 problem Mine has 5 screws if that helps determine what i would need for the change over to auto locking hubs.I'm pretty sure it was 5 or maybe 6 not real sure but if its totally important i'll look.I would really like to make the change if it wouldnt be to expensive or alot of work to do so.If anyone knows exactly what i would need to make the transformation id sure appreciate the info. And if anyone has such hardware their not gonna use id be glad to buy it from ya.

Thanks Allen

I have a '95 F150 4x4 as well. Mine came with automatic hubs. It wasn't a couple of years after I bought the truck new that the they started malfunctioning. When I say malfunctioning, I mean one of them would engauge by itself when I was going around corners and such. This produced an aweful loud racheting sound. I took it to the dealer since it was still under warranty and they said Ford had released a new revised version of the same hub and they replaced them for free. Then less than 6 months later the same problem started happening again. So once again Ford replaced them for free with some "updated" version. Several years passed with no problem and then during a snow storm one of hubs wouldn't engauge. Thus no 4 wheel drive because I don't have limited slip up front. The axle just turned inside the non-engauged side.
After that, I got rid the darn things and put Warn premium manual locking hubs on it. I haven't had a problem since.

The reason for the novel here it that I beleive the auto hubs are just not that reliable and may leave you stranded somewhere. And being that you are disabled it would make it that much more difficult.
Just my 2 cents,
Eric

Ford4ever1976,
I have a 95 F150 that I took the Auto hubs from and put the Warn Premiums on. I had the same trouble as the rest of the guys, but the hubs only had about 40K on them when they were replaced. I still have all the hardware if you are interested. I think everything is there, but the snap rings that hold the hubs onto the shaft (I think) are bent. Ford would have these replacements. I am done with them, so let me know if you still want to convert. Email me at sshurtleff21@hotmail.com and I can send you pics.
