I think i considered that at one time but found that because of the way the belt runs around the pulley's you cant do it unless you install some sort of idler pulley. I have heard of people gutting the pump and just leaving the bearings intact.

you can take it off by just getting a shorter belt. thats what i did anyway. I know on the 5.0 mustangs you have to use an idler. I have under drive pulleys as well, i couldnt find a belt that was just the perfect size, the one i have is just a bit too long, but it works.

Make sure you remove your cats if you're gonna do that, otherwise they will slowly clog up.

Hey does removing the smog pump and all that crap affect the computer, cause codes to trip? I have been considering doing the same but thought it might cause problems
And do you think it would produce any noticeable power

I think it's about the silliest thing you can do, next to painting your truck hot pink, and mounting a ricer wing over the bed, but that's just me.

I lost my cats first, then the air pump. with no cats, no need for the thing, so why let it take up space? I also discovered that one of the hoses going back to the cats had a hole in it, so it wasnt doing its job anyway.

Hey, it's your truck. Do what you want. You asked if anyone had any thoughts, and I think it's silly. The horsepower gain is minimal. If you think you feel a difference, it's in your head. Bypassing the smog pump will cause your engine to run hotter, and it will force you to remove your cats. That's a lot of work for a hotter engine with no performance gain, not to mention it's illegal in most states, therefore I think it's silly.

You asked.

Take care,
~Chris

yeah, pkrwud is right, there is nothing to gain by it. When I bought my truck it had no cats in it. About 400000 miles later my smog pump locked up on me so I didn't want to buy a new one. I removed all that stuff and while it cleaned up the engine compartment it did nothing for power gains. I am running more engine coolers then planned by ford so I didn't notice any heating problems but you probley have a diffrent set-up.

i never said anything about doing it for more power.

how does it cause your engine to run hotter???

i am going to install long tube headers and a duals, my cats are gutted because they plugged up.

i might either go just long tubes and good mufflers or i might get hipro cats and hook it up with the extra junk.

just trying to plan ahead

The smog pump has a cooling effect on the cylinder heads by reducing the combustion chamber temps. Eliminating it can significantly increase the cc temps, and ultimately the engine temp. It also increases the odds of detonation for the same reason, so if your timing is advanced beyond 10 or 12 degrees, you're gonna need to spend more for higher octane fuel, again with no performance increase.

If you do opt to install cats of any kind, you need to have the smog pump hooked up, otherwise your cats will clog again.

Good luck.

Take care,
~Chris

I dunno how much the smog pump could decrease engine temps, its pulling in the same air that your intake is. Besides, ford's later models (96' & 97') have the smog hookups located in the exhaust manifold, which means it doesn't run any air through the heads which could possibly lower the temps. They seem to run fine.
