Hey Guys,
I would really like a tach for my truck, it has the regular cluster with the speedometer in the middle and 2 gauges on each side. If I locae a pod with the tach, is it a plug and play deal??

I did the swap on my '93 F150, piece of cake. Here is a link to info I got:

Basically you can get the cluster from any truck or bronco that has the same engine as yours. If you have a six then you need a six doner, if an eight than an eight doner. The gauges are in modules that plug into the printed circuit board. You reuse your speedo and put in the new tach cluster and then plug it in, the wiring is already there. Good pricing seems to be between $75 and $100 for a salvage unit.
A word of advice, make sure when you locate some clusters, inspect the shift indicator if it's an auto trans vehicle. My salvage yard broke the doner one, but fortunately my original indicator worked fine so I just swaped them out. That's pretty much it, take your time, and keep track of all the pieces and fasteners and you will have a tach in no time.

For the 96, there's no difference between V8 and I6 instrument clusters. The tach is driven through the PCM off of the PIP sensor in the distributor which pulses every second rev. I strongly suspect that the earlier years are the same. Ford would be extremely unlikely to have created a potential assembly error and/or spare parts inventory requirements.
Well just to be safe I made sure mine was from an eight. Mine actually came from a Bronco. There is a label on the printed circuit board that said "8 cyl" on it and supposedly the six is marked as well. StrangeRanger knows his stuff so that is probably true. I know the most important thing is to use your speedo because it has the correct gearing and tranny calibration as well as your current mileage. If you buy one from Ford, they make you give them your old one and have the new one programmed with your current mileage and calibration. Of course who wants to pay the small fortune they want, right?

How long did the "operation" take to replace the original cluster with the new Tach model, with the original speedo?

Get a '94 cluster. I put a 92 in my 94 and had several problems. The charging system didn't work and the ABS was disalbed with an error code. I think there are some wires that can be swapped to fix the problem, but I didn't find this out until yesterday. I'm not sure about 95-6.
