Arizona Wildfires

Here's a fairly interesting bit of news regarding Arizona's largest wildfire in recorded history: http://www.bensonnews-sun.com/articl...news/jnews.txt

What's interesting about it, to me, is that our beloved Senator, John McCain said, when asked about the cause of this and other fires, that some of them were caused by illegal aliens crossing into Arizona: http://latino.foxnews.com/latino/pol...ona-wildfires/

Now, to be sure, he did not say the Wallow fire specifically was caused in this manner but he chose the Wallow fire as a venue to make this statement, to make a case for border security. He certainly left many people with the idea that all these fires were caused by border crossers.

Somehow, I think this is "dishonest". And, I doubt Senator McCain is going to suddenly start advocating for prohibiting young Caucasian males from the forests to protect them, now that the real cause of the Wallow fire has been determined.

Another very serious fire, that was burning at about the same time is still under investigation: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/02/us/02wildfires.html Immigrant caused? Maybe, but there's no real evidence to this.

Finally, the Monument fire, near Serra Vista, is still under investigation too: http://www.inciweb.org/incident/2324/

It's convenient to blame a group that has no voice for everything that's wrong with the world. I'd like our elected officials to do better.

Is there a good chance that the last two fires here were caused by people crossing illegally? Of course. But it's irresponsible to state that is the case before it's shown to be true.

One of the reasonable questions that was asked in the case of one of those fires, the Monument fire, was posed in response to the assertion of the Sheriff there that it was caused by immigrants trying to escape from the Border Patrol. "If that's the case, why didn't they [the Border Patrol] call it in?"

Heck, maybe an agent of the Border Patrol started the fire. *shrug*. We've seen firefighters start wildfires in Colorado and Arizona. Our other brilliant Senator, Jon Kyle, blamed the Rodeo Fire on "radical environmentalists" and their opposition to logging to thin the forests. It was in fact, a part-time firefighter who wanted "work".

How can you defy this logic.

“Who set the fire?” asked Ed Ashurst, an area rancher who is convinced that he knows. “It’s obvious. There’s a few people in America who don’t think man walked on the moon in 1969. To say that illegal aliens didn’t set the fire is like saying that Neil Armstrong didn’t walk on the moon.”

Mr. Ashurst acknowledges that his case is circumstantial. “Did anyone see the aliens drop a match or a cigarette? No. But we all know who started this. Who else would be up there?”

Burning down my own hope? Nah....

Let's say that I was trying to escape to a country where I thought I could do better even if I was breaking their laws.

I sure wouldn't set my own hopes on fire. That's just stoopid.
