i shoot shotguns competitively and easily go through 50,000 a year. once you get going its pretty easy to rack up some serious numbers

lol.

It depends. My 22 silencers are Hollywood quiet but you don't get the "pew pew" sound. Certain silencers will have low pitches (45acp) and some will have high tones (9mm). I can shoot a 45 in my backyard and you can't hear it in the house. And I saw that myth busters episode, the db readings were that of the movie silencers but without the stupid james bond tone.

I'll be filming a silencer lineup tomorrow in my backyard with a range buddy. Well have over 12 silencers. I'll post it here.

Mostly. It depends on caliber and quality of silencer.

The key is firing sub-sonic ammunition. Which I'm sure Fireman knows, the .45 ACP is.

But they are not as quiet as Hollyweird makes them out to be.

Or subsonic 9mm shot through a high end silencer with some h20 in it to help with suppression. There are so many factors its not even funny. Like for example, when the humidity outdoors is higher the sound waves will travel further and same goes for when it's winter time as the air is more dense. Manufactuerers design the 9mm cans with a high pitch frequency tuned baffle stack as higher pitched sounds will drop off faster as the distance increases. This is why shooting a top of the line 45 can sounds better for the shooter because the tone is lower yet the sound will carry on a further distance because the frequency is lower. Sometimes when shooting my 9mm cans the "snap" of the tone will hurt my hears yet the db rating is well below OSHA's 140db hearing damage cut off.

I've had friends stand in my front yard while I shoot 22 and 9mm and they can barely hear what sounds like a bb gun but when I shoot the 45 they say it sounds like someone dropping a heavy book into grass right next to them. Of course adding water to a suppressor will quiet everything down because now your making the heat and energy entering the can have to do something. When the heat enters a wet can it converts the water to steam, which absorbs a lot of energy and when the water turns to steam the steam absorbs the heat faster which in turn robs subsequent shots of oxygen. This is also why the 1st shot through dry suppressor is louder, because it's igniting the available oxygen inside the suppressor.

I can go on and on, as silencers have a **** ton of science behind them and I didn't even get into engineering with fluid dynamics, weight, and metal selection heat transfer. Lol
