ford4evrer- The front axles are also 8.8s, just reverse rotation.

wingman- if you have a 4.2 or 4.6l motor the rear is a 8.8, if you have a 5.4l its a 9.75 rear end. the front end is the same no matter what motor. someone already told you how to find out what the gears are.

01f1502wd-do you have a good set of mud tires or aggressive all terains with alot of tread left? have you tried lowering the tire pressure when off roading?- if you can say yes to both of these and you still get stuck a limited slip or locker should be your next step. If your driving is only ocasional wheeling a limited slip might be best, if its more that 50% or more hardcore stuff a locker would be better. simply search around here or google for brands and opinions, a detroit locker is one of the better lockers you can get.

those are pretty street oriented AT's but will be fine for light off roading. Next time your out drop the tires to between 10-15lbs. Dont go below 10 or you might pop the tire off the bead. The aditional footprint will help give you better traction.

edit: Also dont you mean michelin LTX A/T2's?

Yes my last comment was sarcasm.

I would not waste any money on a LS, unless you're doing very light offroading and its a 90%+ street driven truck. The clutches will let you down when you need it most. If you try and put too much torque to one wheel it'll just slip the clutches and then you've got a 0 wheel drive truck. Get a full carrier detroit. With a 2wd you'll most likely never give it enough of a shockload to explode it. It will be a little more squirelly on the road when turning, but not much more than a LS. You'll just need to learn how to drive is all. Heck I daily drove my old 86 Ranger with a welded rear and it was no big deal, just had to know what you were doing when cornering.

are you going to be increasing tire size in the future? if so think about gears while your in there.

are you going to be doing more than 20% off road driving?

have you looked into the price of buying the locker and having it installed, it might be close to a set of 32" mud terrains.

having both tires spin is great but if your using non-aggresive at's it wont matter how many tires are spinning. look into the price of the genral grabber at2- looks and performs similar to a BFG AT but is about 2/3s the price. you can get decent mud terrain tires for cheap.

the detroit is a great locker(youll have to learn to not accelerate through turns so the locker can ratchet or youll chirp tires causing excess wear and possible axle parts failure) but i think your going about upgrading in the wrong order. however if you plan to upgrade your tires soon then the order doesnt matter a ton.
