How to ingauge 4 wheel drive
I just bought a 98 f150 4x4 off road package and was wondering how you go about ingauging the 4 wheel drive. I have had 4x4 in the past, one was, an on the fly just press the button on the dash and you were locked in and ready to go, and on the other, I had to lock in the hubs and the lift up on the shifter to lock it in. But on the 98 I have now, there is no on the dash button, but I do have the shifter on the floor but no locking hub. I have locked it in and used it by lifiting up on the shifter. Now can I do this while I am in gear and driving (for 4 wheel drive low, the truck must be stoped and in neutral) or do I need to be stoped to do this? Thanks
Hello F-150 Dad,
Yes, you can shift from 2HI to 4HI in gear while moving up to about 55 mph, just make sure you don't do it while your back tires are spinning and your front tires are stopped. And you are correct, anytime you go into or out of 4LO you will want to be stopped and in neutral.
Happy 4X4ing,

Sniff....sniff.........here let me cry a little bit for ya
Get over it.
Most people (least of the variety I see around here) don't know that the sticker exists. Besides its on the top of the visor, how often does that ever get destroyed

F150 dad,
The mechanical shift on the fly (MSOF) system is a manual shift 4WD system that allows the operator to chose between two different 4x4 modes as well as 2-wheel drive. The operator can switch between 2WD and 4H mode at speeds up to 88 km/h (55 mph). To engage or disengage 4L range, the vehicle speed must be less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake pedal depressed, and the transmission must be in NEUTRAL.
Shifts between 2H and 4H can be made at a stop or any forward speed up to 88 km/h (55 mph). At temperatures below 0ºC (32ºF) shifts should not be performed above 72 km/h (45 mph).

Powerstroke73... thanks for the spelling lesson. The sticker on the visor is missing, so that is why I posted here, so the good members of F150 online.com could help me out...some do a better job than others.
Thanks Guys

I just looked on mine, 2000 F-150 4x4 MSOF. There is no sticker on the visor that explains how to engage 4x4. The sticker refers me to the owner's manual for complete details on 4x4 operation.
