Axle code 19???

Axle code 19???

Does anyone know what this code number is. I have been told its a 3:31 open diff. and i have been told its a 3:55 open diff. Can someone give me a link to the right answer.

Disregard this post. I figured it out . 27 is on my truck and 19 is on my van.

Question

I have the axel code 19 on my Truck . 1997 F150 Ext Cab. 4.2 L , 5spd. Is this odd to have. Also what is the difference between a "non-limited slip" & a "limited slip"

No it's not odd to have that gear ratio....That's what I had before I put 4.10s in WITH a limited slip.

The difference between limited and non-limited slip is traction. With a "non limited slip" or Open Differential, power is given to whatever wheel is spinning the easiest. So if one tire is on ice and the other isn't, you're gonna get stuck. Also when you're driving straight power is only given to one wheel.

With a limited slip or positraction, power is given to both wheels when going straight(better launches) and when one wheel slips, it gives power to the other wheel.

Thanks, for the quick reply. It sounds like i might want to switch to a limited slip rear end. Is this a hard switch. I would like to stay with the 3.55 ratio.

I don't think it's really that hard to put a limited slip in. I don't have the access to a lift or anything so I didn't do it myself. I took it to a speedshop. The only thing is, limited slips can be expensive ranging from $350-$450 for a good one.

If you're going to get a limited slip, I suggest upgrading your gears while you're at it. I see you have a manual tranny so you probably don't need 4.10s....3.90s would be plenty fo ya.

Would changing the ratio mess with gas
mileage or my speedometer.

Ihave thought about trying to find a wrecked F150 with the H9 (3.55 limited slip) axel and switch the whole thing.

yeah, changing the gear ratio will generally decrease your gas mileage on highway but it MAY increase gas mileage in stop and go traffic.

It's too early to tell if my mileage has decreased...I've only had the gears in for a couple of days.

And yes, it will also affect your speedometer. Mine is way off right now, as I am waiting for a custom program for my superchip.

Probably because it has a 3.73 non-limited slip heavy duty axle.

i want to know what rear i have, i have 2 tags on rear both have a bunch of numbers, what numbers should i be looking at?????

I just bought an 08 F150 Lariat 4x4 that also has the axle code 26.
Seems kind of odd to me too since the code lists that axle on F250's.

I have to put it in 4 wheel drive to back into my driveway with snow on it or i get stuck. I guess i'll be looking at adding limited slip as well.

I would think f250 axles would be stronger and have better traction since its better for towing.

It's not really a F-250 axle. It may be the F-150 heavy duty package with a 10.25" axle. The F-250 is a 10.5".

Why would one axle have better traction than another? The only way that is possible is if one has a limited slip or a locker and the other is open. Yours is open.

Thats exactly what i mean. I wouldnt think an F 250 would even have a non limited slip axle.
