2020 IWE TSB 24-2188 Gas mpg ⬇️

2020 F-150 - 4x4 - 3.5 Echo

Experienced the IWE grinding noise and dealer performed TSB 24-2188

I calculate a reduction of ONE mile to the gallon is this typical?

65 mph- cruise set- highway drive- no A/C = 19.6 mpg

Sounds about right because the IWE's are now permanently locked.

I would be delighted to change hubs to manual locking but unsure if applicable.

Does winter blend gasoline have a lower mpg?

I don't see anyone who makes manual hub IWE replacements. Yes, winter blend will lose mileage.

On an "04 I had with IWE problems I disconnected them and plugged the vacuum line like this TSB does. I noticed no drop in mileage.
Winter blend fuel drops my mileage 1-2 mpg

What do you do when you need 4WD?

They are always locked so 4wd works.

Talking Winter blend gasoline

(my opinion) I really don't think the fuel blend causes lower mileage. But, what really does is the much colder air that kicks in the computer to provide more fuel to keep the ratio right. Coild air is much more dense than warm air so every pulse of a piston brings more air in that has to be compensated for. My 2019 Ridgeline RTLE suffer about a 3-4 mpg drop in mileage during the winter months up here in NE Michigan. Hard to say with my F150 as its a plow truck. Remember, just my opinion.

Yeah, I had TSB 24-2188 done on my 2020 3.5 as well and noticed a similar drop—about 1 mpg on average.
It’s annoying, but I guess the fix affects how the front axle disconnects now.
At least the grinding is gone, that was driving me crazy.
Still, kinda disappointed Ford hasn’t found a more efficient solution.
Curious if anyone else saw their mpg bounce back over time?
