Re-Gearing to 4.10.

i recently purchased a 95 F-150 2wd. I plan on lifting it and have read many articles about re-gearing to 4.10 for anything larger than 33" tires. Ideally I want a 6" lift paired with 35s. I emailed a few shops around San Diego to see what they would charge to re-gear the diff. My question is, how difficult is this to do on my own? I have a pretty good head when it comes to mechanics, is this a difficult job? Is it reccomended to have a shop install it? I bought the truck for 500 and I am trying to keep the whole project under $3000. Anybody have step by step instructions? I have also looked online at eBay for a whole 4.10 axel and found a few for about $400...would that be easier to install than installing new gears?

If you can get a whole axle for $400 and can do the swap yourself, that would be the way to go. It's not easy to do a gear swap, it requires experience and precision to set it up correctly.
