Open diff SUCKS
Well tonight while at work I got stuck in a culvert. The drive wheel was spinning in wet clay (filled the rain channels in the tire so it was slick as hell) while my non-spinning tire was firmy planted on cement from those water pipe openers. It took me 30 minutes but I finally got her out. Come hell or high water, this truck is getting its rear-end replaced with a 3.55 LSD with some disc brakes one day.

poor raptor. haha. open diff is just something were gonna have to deal with cuz its an expensive swap.
and 429 boss youd be very surprised how these v6's do with the manual trans. im running 3.08 gears and 35"s and the guy that test drove the truck after getting it aligned yesterday said it has great power for a v6 let alone on 35"s

I thought all the auto's were 4r70w
and the gearing isnt great for 35's you would be better off with 4.10's-4.56's which is a lower gear

Yeah, I'm reasonably sure after doing some research:
http://www.vibratesoftware.com/html_...atios_Main.htm
My door placard shows code 17 for gears and "E" for the transmission.
Axle Codes
L - Limited Slip Differential
C - Conventional Differential
Code Ratio
15 3.31C
16 3.73C
17 (1997) 3.73C
17 (1998) 3.55C
17 (1999-2002) 3.31C
19 3.55C
H5 3.31L
H6 3.73L
H7 3.31L
H9 3.55L
Transmission Codes
Code Model
B 4R75E
C 6R75
E E4OD/4R100
F 6HP26
G 6HP26
U (1997-2002) AOD
U (2003-2004) 4R70W
W 4R75W
Some more info here from Wikipedia:
E4OD
The C6 was replaced by the E4OD which was modified to include a fourth forward speed and electronic shift controls, replacing the hydraulic control mechanism of the C6.
Applications:
* 1990–1996 Ford Bronco
* 1989–1998 Ford E-Series
* 1997–1998 Ford Expedition
* 1989–1998 Ford F-Series
[edit] 4R100
The E4OD was updated in 1998. Ford renamed it the 4R100 in keeping with new naming standards. It was largely the same as the E40D, but with some reinforcements to address reliability concerns.
Applications:
* 1999–2003 Ford Super Duty
* 1999–2003 Ford Expedition (with 5.4 V-8)
* 2000–2003 Ford Excursion
* 1997–2004 Ford E-Series
So the 4R100 is a pretty good tranny I take it?
