expensive? i see 8.8's all day long for 100-300 bucks for the whole axle. its not a hard swap 4 leaf spring bolts and the shock bolts and drive shaft.

done it before both axles on 2 excurtions not to bad to do at all...just the 10.25 and the dana 60 are mad heavy compared to our lil 8.8's 8.8 is easy to pick up.... the 10.25 i think i droped somthing but i did it.

ya that stuffs pretty easy... as long as the brake cables dont snap.

pulling gears is kidna hard but for as cheap as the whole axle is why not just do that?
its easy and its very easy to screw up gears. but if you swap axles thats kinda hard to screw up.

ya i know of a few people with factory LS that they have blown up to the point its an open diff. but i blew mine sky high during a brake torque so mines only got about 15-20K on it

The stock LS use clutchs that engage and disengage. these are a wear item.

Once blown they can severly damage the Ring and Pinion.

I wouldn't say mine are blown, just worn.

I just had a LS installed on my F-150 last week. Should have done it a couple of years ago. Much better now.

I have worn LS clutches on my F-250, so that comes next.

Personally I just stick a log in the back of the for the winter months. It still doesn't take care of every situation but the rear end on my truck is so light that it is worthless on ice without some weight so an extra 200 lbs makes a huge difference. Plus it makes it look leveled. lol

Disk brakes were still an option on the 99 XLT, but maybe standard on the lariat.

Best way to get that extra weigh in the winter is fill the bed with snow. I leave my toneau off for that reason. Just pack it down or it will look like a blizzard when you drive down the road

its kinda cool if you dont pack it down to watch how the air comes off the roof and makes the lil air pocket of swirling snow lol.
