Drivetrain vibration in 99 Ford 150

Add one more to the list. Dealer had it for three weeks while fixing it. Then wanted me to pay $8 when they washed it!
Here's what they did:
Reindex, balance tires, no change.
Replaced motor mounts, no change.
Isolated exhaust(?), no change.
Replaced pinion gear, no change.
Replaced pinion gear again, grinding noise.
Replaced rear axle with factory new one, fixed?
While driving home, there was the same old vibration. Happens around 1700-1900 RPM. Taking it back next week to have the Service Rep drive it. Will let you know if they find anything.

I've got a vibration at 1750 rpm +- 25. It's independent of speed, but engine has to be under load. The dealer replaced the exhaust on mine, no change/charge. I've heard something about the output shaft of the transfer case (if you've got 4x4). Who knows?

For those that complained about the vibrating gas pedal there's a fix out for that too. I had it done to mine and it worked. The dealer has a SSB (not sure of the number) to reroute the accelerator cable away from the power steering resevoir. That cured it. Bob

My '97 has a harmonic balancer or something similar on the output shaft of the transfer case - just in front of the u joint. It is about 9" to 10" in diameter and about 1" thick. The reason I noticed it was because it separated from the rubber spacer on the inside diameter and then it moved down the driveshaft and made a ringing sound as the drive shaft rotated. This was replaced under warrenty and has since given me no trouble. Have they eliminated this balancer on later models? Maybe this is the cure?

TSB 99108 was issued for this. From what I understand they remove the cable from the P/S resevoir clamp and cover it with rubber insulation. It worked for me. I hope this helps.---Bob

I also had vibration problem with my 2000 4.6 at about 65mph at 1700rpm. I just replaced the stock exhaust with a flowmaster system. I no longer have the vibration I onced felt. I can only contribute the problem with the stock exhaust system.

My 99 150 vibrated @ 43 mph like all four tires were out of round. Dealer did all mentioned fixes. Not until factory svc bulletin/modification came to dealer could they stop it. It consisted of a counter balance/dampener installed inside the rear bumper. Stopped 99% of vibe. (I also had a bad "fluid driveshaft" they replaced it on my first visit. Contact my dealer:

Bob, it was installed inside rear bumper, I checked. I'm thinking since truck bed is now fiberglass, there is some kind of wind harmonics/wind lift?? I still have just a tad of vibe @ 40-45 mph. How about yours?

the d/shaft is filled with a viscous fluid of some kind. Mine vibed @ 63mph out of the gate. Dealer indexed/rotated tires, etc.
By the way, I took the mechanic for a ride in one of their trucks on the lot and it vibed @ 43-45mph just like mine did! Dealers should have TSB showing inst loc for dampener. Larry

Even with the new drive shaft and damper on the rear axle it still has a little low pitched rumble or booming at 70-75 MPH. Funny, I get a similar noise right at 63MPH. I didn't know there was fluid in there. What happens if it gets low???

Bob-check above post silversport mentioned exhaust, they do get harmonic resonance if loose I've noticed, requiring exhaust dampener. As to low D/shaft fluid, it's supposed to be a sealed unit. Don't know where they'd put a dipstick. LOL
Seriously tho, this has to be an engineering design flaw/screw-up cause I've NEVER heard of these kinds of problems until fiberglass bed skins were introduced, as well as "hubcentric" design wheels. What the heck was wrong with the century-old design? Progress--ain't it grand? Larry

Well here is my update. Dealer had it for another 13 days. They replaced the accelerator cable and said everything was OK. It was, for about 30 miles. Needless to say I'm not taking it back. Ford did offer up the extended warranty at no charge for all my troubles. BTW I forgot to mention that they had also replaced the driveshaft the first time around.
Lesson learned: if you think you have rear end troubles just complain about a vibrating gas pedal. Guess if my A/C starts having troubles I should say the tail gate is broke.
Larry, I agree that it isn't the dealer, mechanic or svc manager that caused the problem. But they are the ones that the paying customer has to work with to get a solution. All I know is I'm tired of making payments while my truck is in their garage instead of mine.
