slipping then 2 noises by front tires, sounds like 4wd engagment... Help Please

Heres the facts...

This has happened 3 times for me in the past week.

1) under Heavy or Light acceleration or constant speed
2) hear a whirring noise from the front of the truck
3) slow down to nearly a stop < 10 MPH
4) Hear 2 clunks, 1 on passenger side then immediately following 1 on drivers side
5) problem goes away for a day or two and then happens again

The best way i can describe it is that it sounds like i am trying to engage my 4wd and the gears are just spinning until i slow down enough for the teeth to engage.

Very confused. any insight is greatly appreciated.

2006 f150 xlt 5.4 Signature isn't showing up for some reason so there are the stats.

There is a TSB for the 4WD engagement solenoid on the 04-06.

Take a look at THIS POST for details.

Solenoid is about $27 at the dealer. If not addressed, you will be looking at replacing your hubs, if not damaged already. (Sorry.)

UPDATE - IWE Solenoid Replacement with Pictures.

All,

Here are my findings on my problem above.

1) TN-150 has a post on IWE's here https://www.f150online.com/forums/ar...replacing.html

2) xjcamaro89 has a post on the whole IWE System here https://www.f150online.com/forums/ar...then-some.html

3) and here is my contribution, my pics of the replacement

IWE Located behind the battery on the firewall.

Removal of IWE Solenoid from bracket if your new one didn't come with a new bracket and you need to reuse the old one. Just clips into the bracket, clip shown here.

difference between old and new (water shielding on the new one)

Prior to hooking up the Plug and Vac Lines

All hooked up

Part Number / Box

-----------------

If you have any questions on replacement of the solenoid, the pictures are in my albums in my profile, or feel free to PM Me.

Hope this helps everybody out!!!

See, not hard at all, eh? Nice write-up.

Suggestion/Request: Why not rotate the pics so folks don't have to turn their monitor on it's side?
