transfer case snapped in half!

this is a 97 ford f150 4x4 and right behind the transmisson is a transfer case, i have no idea how this happened..never seen it befor but the transfercase snapped completly in half , all the way around. im not sure if i need a new tranny and transfer case or what. this is my first truck any help wouyld be appreciated. if you happen to know tranny and transfer case models that would help as well... thanks for replying

I'd say your best bet is get it to a mechanic. We're all gonna be guessing and giving our best advice and that will only get you so far and your truck still won't be fixed.
Mine was a 1997 F150 4X4 as well. Mine happened after our big ice storm back in January and I was crawling over huge logs and going places I have never gone before. My understanding is that that on that model the 6 bolts on extension housing to the transfer case hold all the weight and it is common for this to happen.

thought i would reply in this thread instead of your other one.
first off, you sure it was the actual transfer case that split and not where it mounts to the transmission?
also, we need more info on the transmission. is it an automatic? is the pan square or rectangular? is the transfer case electronic or manual shift?
