i am probably too late... its roughly 500 miles.. change the fluid and then you will be able to go WOT and tow and have all sorts of fun again.

Make sure you go REALLY easy for the first 20. stop let differential cool completely.
21-100 go really easy.
101-500 just go easy on the truck no WOT, and try to keep it no higher than 2000 rpms if you for some reason have to stomp on it.

WOT = Wide Open Throttle and yes, change both diff fluids. They use a coating on the gears during shipping that can reak down your gear oil plus and after 500 miles that coating will be off the gears and floating in the fluid plus the first 500 miles lets the gears set and "wear" in a bit, sometimes causing a bit more "debris" then normal. Taking it easy and allowing for proper "wear in" time will help ensure the gears longevity.

So what gears did ya get ?

The coating on the gear teeth from the factory needs to be removed prior to setting the gear spacing and pinion depth. Any residual coating (usually cosmolene) is not going to hurt the gear oil. There's no need to replace it unless you're having a problem.

For the break-in, contact the gear manufacturer. It will vary from one manufacturer to another, but most say drive it as you normally would, just no towing for the first 500 miles.

Insurance against what? If there was anything in there that was going to cause a problem, after 500 miles, the damage would already be done and changing the fluid wouldn't make any difference.

^^^ I agree... that coating may be an "old school" rule but I will stick with it. Its cheap, easy, and why not ? They still say you get more debris in the first couple hundred miles then you will during the rest of their life.

Either way, why wouldn't you ?

Why waste the $50 on gear lube when there's no need? I'm all for it if there's a valid reason for it. When you first bought the truck, did you change the gear lube after 500 miles? If so, it wasn't because the manufacturer recommended it.

Yes, it will generate more 'debris' per mile when new than later as it ages (save for maybe the end, right before it grenades itself), but if it's been properly set-up, that 'debris' will be collected on the magnet in the diff cover, just like the original factory gear-set's 'debris' did. It's not going to adversely affect the life of the gears, so why bother? It's simply a waste of $50 worth of perfectly good gear lube, another opportunity to introduce contamination (dirt, debris, and grit off the undercarriage), and one more chance for the cover seal to not seal perfectly, or to break a bolt or strip a thread. There's just no need.

I'm not saying it's a BAD idea, I'm just saying it's not necessary. You can change your engine oil every 500 miles too if your heart so-desires. But again, it's just unnecessary.

Good points... but yes I am the guy who drives it straight to the shop after I pick it up and change out all the fluids. not necessary but then i will know whats in there, know how much is in there. I guess its just being a tad OCD. And fluid changes are no where near $50 so... its fine for me, and I am not wasting any money. I am sure your right and it would be fine, but I would rather not chance it. Oh, and go get the Mag-Hytech diff cover, makes diff fluid changes a breeze! Got a drain plug and a filler hole. Even has a dip stick!

GIJoeCam: That right there could be my favorite quote in anyones sig. Its just perfect for around here
