Silicone or Gasket for Differential Cover

Axle Seals are ready for replacement on 8.8 Limited Slip. I've always used a gasket and silicone, but was wondering if Silicone only should be used. Which is better? Any suggestions??

ive never done a differential but ive always used silicone and gasket on tranny pans. never had a leak. tranny fluid will leak easier i would think becaause its much thinner.

I'm going with silicone only, being that this is the way it came from the factory. Good and clean, 1/8" bead all the way around. Thanks

Hey make sure you go around every bolt hole in addition to the 1/8 bead around the cover Also try to find a good oil resistant silicone and follow the assembly cure time on the silicone

I can't figure out why I never hear anyone here talk about using " The Right Stuff " NAPA sells it, along now with an application gun, since the cheese whizz style can is history. Once you use this stuff as a gasket maker, you'll never go back to straight silicone. In this part of the country, it's spoken of like a religious thing.

Can't go wrong with Permatex Black. I used that when i had my 8.8 and it sealed it up like a champ. Like Kevin24 said, make sure to go around each bolt hole in addition to a solid 1/8th inch wide bead around the pumpkin. Better safe than sorry.
