4:56 or 4:88

I need advice on gearing. I have the 02 4.2 with 35's now. when my mud grapplers wear out and need replacing i want to add the body lift and go to 38's. should i get the 4:56 for best performance with 35's then just make the 4:56 work with 38's? or should i get the 4:88 now, and is 4:88 to tall for the 35's.

If you plan on keeping the 38's on there then I would go with the 4.88 but if you aren't stay with the 4.56. The 4.56 will pull the 38's but it will strain your truck that much more. On the gear charts 4.88 are in the high range for 35's so you would be turning some rpms but I think that you could manage if you dont mind driving a little slower on the highway. Hell if you do get the 4.88 before the tires get there I want to see the burnout that you will be able to do w/ your old tires.

Thanks For The Advice I Think I Will Go With The 4:88 And Just Deal With The High Rpms Till I Get The 38's, I Figure I Got About 18,000 Left On The 35's.

The difference between 4.56 & 4.88 is noly about 7% so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Lots of us run 4.10s on street tires (31-inches in my case) and RPM aren't excessive at all...so 4.88 on 35s or 38s will be fine.

You'll love them. My bro-in-law runs 3.73 with his 35s and his truck is a dog compared to a friend's truck which is almost identical but with 4.56/4.88 (I can't remember what he's got in there right now).

I already changed my gear out to 4.56 and i love them with the 35's i have on now. but I ordered 4.88s becasuse I am doing the same thing. when these wear out i'm going up to 38s. the last thing i want it to have a the truck be a bit doggy again after switching tires. I would go with 88s!

I couldn't find 88s from ford racing. I bought the yukon gears. I don't really know anything about them, they just sounded good and weren't the cheapest gears out there. It seems that you get what you pay for in most cases.

What rear end does your truck use? I'd go with the biggest gear you can with that size tire and the V6. .
