Smile 4X4 Question?

Is it possible for the drivers side front wheel to be engaged and the passenger side not? I have a 2001 F-150, 4.6, Manual Trans. and floor shifter for my 4 wheel drive. My drivers side sounds engaged and the passanger side not. Help!! Pete Could the sound be something else?

Not possible on your vehicle. The engagement on your vehicle is at the diff, not the wheels. You don't have hubs on your vehicle, just CV joints.

Then what is the problem?

If the four wheel can't be engaged one side at a time then what can the noise be? Hub bearing or cv joint? Thanks

That's a possibility. Is the CV boot torn? If so, it almost certainly has dirt in it, and possibly no grease.

CV Boot

CV boot not torn. Just rotated tires to see if was tire noise. Spun both sides when in the air by hand-drivers side spins harder than passenger side. Looks like the bearing.

Also check calipers and brakes to make sure they aren't dragging. I believe the bearing hub on those is a one piece sealed unit. Not sure though.

Kingfish you are correct, the bearing hub is a sealed unit. I had to replace the left one on my 97 F150 4x4.

Brakes are fine.

Thanks guys. Could the sound be anything else but a hub bearing?

Just because the boot isn't torn, does not mean it isn't a bad CV joint. Probably best bet is to get it diagnosed somewhere that you trust.
