I ordered my truck on 1/13/00 picked up delivery on 3/6/00. It can depend on which dealership you buy from, they may have more or less allocation for delivery.
Marv1,
I ordered mine because I wasn't in a hurry to get my truck (I wanted to pay off or sell my trade-in). I could have bought one off the lot but my dealer didn't have one or have one coming in. I also paid invoice for it, they can't sell for invoice if they have to do a dealer trade. The dealer that had the truck gets the holdback. At least that is what I was told.

dlb's post remined me of another reason for a custom truck order: Ford Credit also made a payment book made just for me! It's even in an acceptable color.......

Marv1 and BlueBlood,
Marv, I ordered my truck because I wanted exactly the right truck for that kind of money.
BlueBlood, if a 5 speed 4.6 XL S/C 4x4 was nearly impossible to find, try finding a 5 speed 4.6 XLT S/C 4x4 with an 8 foot box. I only found one, but it was tan. Custom order was the only way to go and I know that nobody hotrodded it during a test drive. I can count on one hand how many people have driven my truck.

I just ordered mine yesterday. . . But other than getting the options/colors you want, it really is a neat feeling seeing the truck for the first time and know it was built just for you, and no one else.
Besides from getting exactly what you want when you order, I have always been able to get the truck MUCH cheaper when I order. My friends and family all drive Fords and each one of them got a way cheaper price from ordering their truck. Any explanations for this?

I've ordered the last two I've owned for several reasons. I have found it to be cheaper, I wonder if it is because their overhead is less for the ordered trucks.
Other reasons include:
Anytime you can have something made to order it feels better when you get it.
It doesn't cost any more.
Take advantage of the great American system, look at all the rice cars that are built here and it is still hard to order one the way you want it.
It's more personal.

I ordered mine 22 January and just got a call this morning that it arrived. Hopefully dealer pre-delivery will be done by this afternoon and I'll have a new truck for the weekend! That makes about 7 weeks from order to delivery.
Oh, and to answer an earlier question about why I ordered...for a ~$30,000 truck I wanted to get exactly what I wanted and I didn't want it taken out on any harsh test drives before it was mine.

I originally ordered on Jan. 17 the truck showed up Mar. 13, I picked it up yesterday and I believe it is the best purchase I've made in a long time. At 120+ miles already. Haven't been on the interstate, yet. (too much construction) Will have pics soon.
BTW: Those of you expecting floormats with your XLT, Ford raised the MSRP $95 and yanked the floormats from Std equip. Despite what the brochure says. The foormats were yanked November 22, 1999 and come STD only with the Lariat. The salesman's book still listed them as standard and after doing A LOT OF whinning they ordered them for me. Supposedly the manufacturer couldn't keep up with production. It's a sad world if we can build trucks faster than a set of mats.

I think the reason ordered trucks may be cheaper has to do with "flooring" and dealer holdbacks which are around 3%. With a "floored" vehicle, the longer the vehicle sits on the lot, the less dealer holdback the dealer get. With an ordered vehicle, the dealer would get all of the holdback because there would be minimal time on the lot.
I noticed that my truck did not come with floor mats either. I called my salesman and let him know that they were not in the truck and that the brocure stated standard on an XLT, he went and looked and told me to come down and pick a set up. I went down there and he pulled a set out of a truck on the lot and I went home. No arguement or battling over it.

Ordered my truck on 2/7/00. Picked it up 3/15/00. I was impressed and surprised it came in so quick. The dealer gave me a build week of 2/28/00. My salesman told me he would put a rush on it, I thought he was just blowing smoke up my (you know what). I found out later he was one of the top Ford salesman in the country, so I guess he wasn't kidding. The wait was hard, but definitly worth it.
