Removing front axle
Removing front axle
I have a 1997 f-150 4x4, The other day while changing the right front tire I noticed the outer cv boot was torn. I have taken the axle out but can not get the axle apart to replace the boot. Can someone tell me how to do this. Thanks
I can't help you but I though I might be able to steer you in a right dirrection.
Most CV joints have a friction ring inside the CV towards the inside of the joint. Most of these need nothing other than pursuation to knock them off. If you cringe thinking of smacking it off, most larger towns and cities have a local CV axle shop that will re-boot it for a nominal fee....under $40. Because you already have a boot, you might be able to spend only $25.
These are not usually well known outside the automotive industry, so you might go to your local shop and ask what CV shop they use.
I hope I helped....Good luck..

If you've gone to all the trouble to take it off, run up to your nearest AutoZone and pick up a whole new halfshaft assembly. It will (obviously) have a new boot, and will also come with a lifetime guarantee. It's more work than it's worth to replace the boot alone.
