4.56 gears on backorder?
#3
I ran into the same problem last week. Arranged with a shop last Friday to get my truck in this Monday for 4.56s, then they called me back and told me they wouldn't have the gears in until the 1st of August...so the truck doesn't go in until the 4th...it wasn't the rear 9.75 that was back ordered though...it was the front's 8.8...go figure....

Price varies by region... I don't think anyone has ever posted they paid 2K per axle.
Both axles need to have the same gear ratio if they are to work in tandem. I suppose you could just swap out the rears and then never engage the front axle but then you just have 2WD.

It should only be $1500 - $2000 (roughly) for both front and rear...if someone is charging $2000 per differential tell them to pack sand, literally! I was quoted $1600 for both front/rear using precision gears (4.88). $1900 if I wanted 3 yr extended warranty, which might not be too bad.
Also, YES...you must have both front and rear running on the same gear set for 4 wheel drive. If not, it would kinda be like having the front in 1st gear and the rear in 5th gear. You can just re-gear the rear but NEVER put it in 4 hi/low...2 wheel ONLY.
As far as the back order on 4.56's for the 8.8, i think that just depends on the brand of gears and the distributor that your shop is going through. I had no problem when I originally wanted 4.56's.
