Red face 98-03 trim levels

hey guys,

Don't want to sound dumb or anything but i'm new to this truck business. I've seen on the ford website that you can pick any one of 5 trim levels on the 05 model, XL, STX, XLT, FX4, Lariat. Unfortunately I don't think i'll really be able to afford a new truck so I'm looking at the previous model. I'll probably end up with a SuperCab but I'm a bit confused when it comes to the trim levels though, I've seen XTRs, Sports, Lariat-FX4s and XLT-FX4s, and so on. Does anyone know where I can get a breakdown of what each model has, so I can have a better idea of what I should be trying to buy in September? Any help would be really appreciated

The bodystyle actually ran from 97-03.

Trimlines 1997-1998

Standard - basic truck, vinyl bench seat, manual windows, locks, argent bumpers(not chrome), etc...

XL - Standard Plus - cloth bench seat, chrome front bumper, underhood light, etc...

XLT - XL Plus - 40/60 split seat, center console, pwoer windows, locks, chrome rear bumper, etc...

Lariat - XLT Plus - V8, Leather, power mirrors, color key grille, alloy wheels, etc...

Trimlines 1999
Standard changed to Work Series

Trimlines 2002
Work Series dropped XL becomes low end entry level

...and that's just Trimlines
Throw into the mix body styles (Regular Cab, SuperCab)
Throw into the mix bed types (Longbed, shortbed, flareside)
Throw into the mix packages (STX, Lightning, Harley Davidson,etc...)
Throw into the mix SuperCrew starting in 2000...
Throw into the mix three engine choices
Throw into the mix 2WD and 4WD

...and you have about 60 different F150 configurations for each model year.

thanks Raoul, that clears things up a little. So STX, FX4, and XTR are extra packages? any idea what the XTR was/is?

XTR is not a factory package. Sometimes individual dealers (or regional groups) will add an aftermarket package and try to label it so it looks like a factory package.

If you're buying used, then those extra sticker packages aren't going to make a big difference.

I had not heard of 'XTR' although some members here have that type. I just thought they were bad spellers (45% of membership) or they were drunk (46% of membership) the other 9% were unexplained like the X-Files.

I did a Google search on XTR F150 an nearly all the hits were from Canada.
I then noticed that about all the members here talkiing 'XTR' were from Canada.

I would hypothesize that the used XTR Ford you are looking at is a Canadian truck.

(Nothing wrong with a Canadian truck, although it may pull to the Left)
(like mine)

yep it's a canadian truck alright, i'm moving out there in a couple months , and I started looking on the autotrader website to get an idea of what my hard-earned cash could get me. Not much by the looks of it but i wanted to get as much research done this side of the pond rather than waste a lot of time and effort once i'm in Vancouver. Thanks for the help guys

And it looks good too. After dad found out the new body style couldn't be had with the 4.6L Five speed, we came very close to orderin a Heritage 04. But we got the 66 instead.
