Rust on an aluminum hood??????
So if our hoods are aluminum then what do I have going on on mine. It sure looks like a rust bubble. I never knew our hoods where aluminum until the other night it was pointed out to me. What do you guy's think it is?

That's what I'll do. I also have the extended warranty. I haven't read it but does it cover any body panels?
BTW, after you told me they where aluminum Stealth, I took the old stick on magnet and sure enough! I never knew that, thanks.

I didn't find out they were aluminum until after a hailstorm. Man the hood took a beating compared to the steel body parts. My fiberglass bed cover remained unscathed.
My buddy tapped on my hood the day I bought my truck and said it sounded really thin so I just grabbed a magnet thinking it might be aluminum and sure enough it was.
If I remember correctly, there is like a 10 year warranty on the paint. So its possible this would be included.

Well the dealer told me I'm sol. 3/36,000 on the body. He said it was a common problem and they see it all the time.
I had to beg to differ since if this was the case then surely it would have been on the boards here and other sites discussing the problem. He told me I could try to talk to Ford and see if they would do anything for me.
Any thoughts?

Unless you live in a harsh environment it's probably an undercoat problem.Aluminum [steel too] must first be treated to prepare for the paint .If these primers are not properly applied the paint tends to peel off and the aluminum corrode.
Hi John, I have the same corrosion issue. As a aircraft structures mechanic this is all to familiar. What was Ford thinking to make hoods from aluminum alloy? Pure alluminum does not corrode but is very soft so other metals are added to make it stonger like copper, magnesium and many others but alloys are corrosive if not treated properly. Aircraft aluminum alloys are sprayed with a pure aluminum coating for protection. If this corrosion protection is scratched or removed the surface must be alodind and primed. Another problem is dissimilar metal corrosion. If other metal like steel is fastened to alluminum alloys there has to be protection like sealant between them. Sorry to say that if left untreated, aluminum alloys that are corroding will not stop until the aluminum is back to its original state---- powder. Aluminum corrosion must be removed by grinding or sanding until no black stains or spots remain or it will come back. treating the surface with alodine wouldnt be a bad idea, it turns the aluminum a light gold color.
