broken mirror glass replacement

Does anyone have any tips or knowledge on how to replace the mirror glass in the passenger side mirror? Mine are power without heat or blinkers. I only need to replace the mirror glass not the entire mirror assembly, the mirror housing is fine. Darn mailboxes.

I think you have to replace the entire assembly... Or at least the parts guy told me that.

I really believe you can repalce the glass only. I found a website that sold the glass by itsself. I mean why would someone offer a replacement if you are unable to replace it? Thanks for the reply though.

A friend of mine at a dealership was able to get me just the glass from Ford. Instructions come with tthe glass. Basically you pop the old one out, then heat up the socket with a heat gun to get the new one in.

Problem solved. My glass came in today, and after looking at the back side of the glass i could see how it mounted. The only tool I needed was a flat screwdriver, it just pops out and the new one pops in. I didnt heat mine up or anything and didn't have any problems but it's probably not a bad idea to do that. Thanks for the help guys.

Bringing this back from the grave.

Those of you who have replaced the "glass only," I assume it came with the plastic backing, and the "socket" you speak of is the ball-and-socket pivot point on the back of the mirror (well, molded into the plastic backing the mirror glass" is bonded to)?

I need to pull the glass out of a standard power mirror, and install my signal-mirror glass into it.

BTW, this is for a '99 Lariat. The setup may be different in the '04+?

I also need to replace my passenger side mirror which is shattered. Is the dealer the only way to get a replacement? Will a junkyard mirror be ruined if dismounted?

wow it was a lot easier than I thought. Just take a flathead and pry the mirror off. Push the new mirror back on and that's it.

I know this post is a bit old, but no sense in double posting. I have a 2000 F150 with power mirrors. My passenger side mirror got knocked out and busted and I just need the glass, but in my searching I've found several different types. Some say sport style, some say plain style, and some say sail style. How do I tell which one I need?

Unhappy Dealership scam

The Dealership around here tried to get me to buy the whole assembly for my 2005 F 150 FX4. They tried tell me that they didn't want to replace the glass because they would break the mechanism and I would have to get a new unit anyway. if you can do it yourself don't go to the dealership to get it done
