Angry Had Enough of Ford (door cracks)

My 97 is going to cost 350.00 per door to fix, so says the dealer. They say Ford won't do anything about it. I say I'm going to sell the piece of junk and buy a Dodge.

I'll try Ford, but i'm not real happy with this. As well you all probably are not. We need to all get together some how and make em get this fixed. I didn't make the doors do that. I guess quality is not actually job #1.

I am suprised nobody has started a lawsuit about these cracks. I mean Ford is suposidly fixing the problem on the newer trucks but what about the trucks that took a little longer to have the problem surfac, they should have to fix all of them.

On the idea of going to Dodge, ARE YOU CRAZY! I know someone who had to take their Dodge in because the welds on the doorring were coming undone, I'd rather have cracks on my doors then have to have my doorrings rewelded!

Went to the dealer today to have my truck serviced and I saw four used F-150's sitting in their used car lot all ranging from 1997-1999 and four of them had at least one door crack and two of them had both doors cracked. Pretty bad situation I would say.

This might be a stupid question but... What does a door crack look like? I found some cracks on the inside edge (not the hinged side) and some bubbled paint right below it also. I thought maybe someone opened the door against a metal post or something...

speedy46,

since you have the crack, can see the movement of the metal flexing as the window is rolled up and down?

My truck was built in late May of 2000, and I have heard conflicting stories about what year models won't get the door crack. Based on info from this board from someone who said you can actually see the flexing take place, I went out and did my darndest and could not see one thing.

This was no 5 minute project. I spent nearly an hour looking at it (looking for flexing while the window went up and down), getting my girlfriend to look, getting neighbors to look, looking at different angles. I tried touching the area so I could "feel" it flex, and felt nothing. I thought maybe the wedgewood blue was all melding together and tricking my vision, so I ran a strip of duct tape over the area (the area you have the crack in on your pic), still couldn't see any flexing or bowing or the slightest movement.

Since you have the crack, maybe you could check if you haven't already and see if you notice the flexing in the metal as the window goes up and down.

I would really like to avoid dealer contact on this one (i.e. I don't want to go in for the prevent if it doesn't look like I'll get any cracks). I've read too many, "I haven't heard anything about that", and then, "Oh yeah, that TSB, sure we'll fix it, it'll take 4 days to do the preventative fix."

speedy46,

My crack on my driver's window looks just like your and my truck is the same color. For a minute I thought it was a picture of my truck.

I have not been to Ford with my crack yet and if it never gets any bigger I probably never will. My crack has been there for over two years and has not changed or rsuted. 99.99% of the people who would take a look at my truck would not find it even if I told them to look for it (unless they were from this site, of course). I definately do not think it is worth gettting so worked up over that someone would trade it for a POS Dodge!

Mine has always been the same size and I am really not worried about any structural integrity because the metal outer skin on the doors does not provide much anyways. The structural intergrity is provided by the cross bracing and the actual frame of the door.

My truck is out of warranty so I am eager to see what those of you get done from Ford that are in the same boat.

Cool

My dealer is going to fix mine. At first contact with the service manager, he said he hadn't seen any door cracks(doubtful). So I printed out the TSB and the service bulletin
sent out by Ford (available on this site), presented it to him at our next meeting, when I left my truck with them for transmission shifting issues. Also informed him that 5 of the 12 used trucks on their lot had the crack. When I picked my truck up 2 days later, he informed me that he is going to fix my door crack at no charge. Also I got 100k mile ESP at no charge because of my many recurring tranny problems. And the kicker here......I have 48,000 miles on my truck.....12,000 miles out of warranty.

Go to your dealer. Go prepared. Go determined. But most importantly, go politely and tactfully. If you explain the problem in a nice and professional manner, and back it up with facts, tell him what options you will accept and be confident in your informed position, you may be surprised at what a cooperative response you may recieve. (It may be reluctively cooperative, but nevertheless.....)

By the way....if you are listening...THANK YOU STEVE EPPINGER! If it were not for F-150online.com, I would not have had the information nor the facts to have gotten what I did from my service manager.

You can definately see the door flexing. Especially when it reaches the top when going up. Now that i've looked at close, you can see it from the inside also.

Another thing, this is something to get worked up about. Also, on advise from all, I'm not going to buy a Dodge. I'm going to by a Toyota Tundra, thanks.

With just over 4000 miles left on my warrenty it looks like if I get the dreaded door crak it will be after the warrenty runs out. I still don't know what I am going to do yet I might keep it or trade for another truck or Mustang GT. It all depends on if I can get a good deal in about another month or 2 on a late 2001 to make room for the 2002's.

Well, I just talked to Ford customer care, they are going to review everything and call me tomarrow with an answer on if they're going to take care of the door cracks.

If you need it, they're number is..... 1-800-392-3673

I'll post their answer when I get it.
