Angry Door crack and lower edge rust

My 98 F150 with `40K is in the shop for door repair with the bracket. My dealer stated that ford will not replace the doors. The problem was discovered at less than 36K so it is under warranty.

In addition, all three doors have rust at the lower inside edge. The body shop states that they have seen it on other F150s. He looked for the problem. They plan to fix the rust problem. Although I'm apprehensive that it will be a long term fix.

I only reviewed the posts for the past 30 days and unless I missed it so no mention of a door rust problem. Is it a common problem?

Bob

The TSB says to replace the door skins if the crack is over 1.5 or 2 inches (Can't rememberthe length) this includes the lenghth under the molding. do not know about the rust.

Find a different dealer. The only way to get rid of the rust it to replace the doors and tailgate. I had the same problem and no independant body shop would touch the rust on a 98. I took it to a different dealer. One with a body shop and they worked with ford to replace all 3 doors and the tailgate. Over $4000. work.

I first saw my door crack about 2 weeks ago while waxing. I imediately got all the information I could from this site and headed off to the local Ford dealer. They were very nice about it. I was going on vacation a week after that and they fixed it while I was on vacation. They put the kit in both doors even though the drivers side was the only one showing. My crack was 1/8" long. But I have not had the door rust problem. I was very pleased with the body work from the dealer.

gerrys,

I noticed rust on the bottom of the back door on my '00 SCab. I had the dealers bodyshop clean it out and repaint it. Since then I have noticed it on the tailgate and the back drivers side door. I have less than 5,000 miles left on my 3yr/36,000 mile warranty. I'm hoping that Ford comes out with some good rebates next month because I would much rather trade for an '01 than go through the hassle of new doors and tailgate.

What color is your truck? Mine is white. I'm wondering if more trucks have this problem, but the dark color is hiding the rust.

I believe that the warranty on body rust is 5yrs or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.

I had a Miinlight Blue over silver SC/LB 5.4.
All F150/Expiditions have this problem if you live where they salt the roads. It is a design problem. I Got rid if it for that ahd other reasons. If you check the used car lots you will find almost all have this proble I first noticed it at 8 months on the 3rd door. They fixed that the next year all doors and tailgate where rusted. The rust warrenty is 5 years for rust through. Get it looked at ASAP. They may cut you a good deal on a trade.

gerrys,

How did you convince the dealer and FoMoCo to replace your doors and tailgate rather than cleaning out the rust and repainting? I'm already noticing the rust coming back on the "band-aid" repair that they did about a month ago.

The body shop at the dealer got them to do it. They did not want to see it come back when the rust reappears. I already had to go through dispute settlement to get then to repaint and fix the crack in the first place. The body shop at the dealership was great. But there sales people had scales(bunch of snakes). You need to find a body shop that will work with you.

Good luck.

I have a 97 Xcab, 3-door, Off Road 4X4 with cracked doors, three doors rusting at the bottom, slight rust on inside edge of tailgate and 84,000 miles.

Misery loves company!!

I'm off all warranties and own all these problems. I'm really pissed and will never buy another FoMoCo product--my Dodge Ram was better than this thing.

All I want is REVENGE now so I tell every F-150 owner I meet about the door cracks, rusty doors, etc.

Now what's this about roof cracks?????

Looks ok but I woould of rather had the skins replaced. They also did the door crack repair while it was done.My truck was the first truck that had it done in Annapolis MD.

My dealer has fixed my cracks, no charge and they even fixed the cracks on my dads 97 f-150 which was out of warrenty for no charge. mine and my dads were the first 2 done through Ford Square in Mt. Vernon, IL. So i wish you all luck in getting yours fixed. Keep trying and dont give up.

My crack was "fixed" by a dealership and it came back!!!! When I returned the truck, they told me they would "fix" the crack again because they did not "fix" it correctly the first time. He then began to show me the rust on the bottom inside of my doors, but quickly stated there is nothing they can do about that because my truck is out of warranty! Think I am buying Toyota or Chevy next time! My father-in-law retired from Ford, but I am getting tired of their poor quality products. My wifes new taurus had all kinds of tranny gaskets and a new tranny servo put in....at....get this.....4000 miles! Now thats a great quality product!!!!

gerrys,

Did FoMoCo replace the whole door and tailgate, or just the skins? I'm waiting for the Tech/Regional Rep to look at my truck and make a decision.
