Thumbs down Leaky window

I have a 1998 SC f-150 with the sliding rear window. I've developed a moderate leak on the passenger's side of the window. I've tried to plug it with silicone to no avail. Just wondering if anyone else was having the same problem.

My 97 F-150 has just developed the same leak. I thought it was the slider leaking and the water running along the top sill. I cleaned it all out and the leak has not been back. Hope that is all yours is.

If you're still under warranty, take it back to the dealer. Either the frame is cracked and it needs to be replaced or it needs to be resealed. Either way, the assembly has to come out.

Even if you're out of warranty, you might be able to get Ford to pay for replacement/repair, especially if you're a good customer.

Hi All,

About your leaky sliding rear window.I have the same problem.Mine is a 97 F-150 4x4S/cab.It leaks at the same place.Pass side top.Aparrently this has been a big problem with rear sliders, although ford will never admit to it.Anyways my warranty has run out also. But I went toa Ford dealership about it.They said how many Kilometers on the vehicle?I said 72000,which is about 45000 miles to you guys. What do you think they said? I'll tell you. They said " Pound salt pal, your warranty is over"So I left a little upset. The next day I went to another dealership, they told me the same thing. Finally I tracked down a dealership with nothing but a good repour with their customers.I went and talked directly to the bodyshop manager. And ( SHE ) said give me about a week and I will see what I can do.She called me back about 4 days later and told me that Ford was willing to do what they called a percentage courtacy replacement.Which means that Ford will pay some , the dealer will pick up the labour and I will pay some. That was OK with me.I priced this window out and it would have cost me 580.00 dollars Canadian to have this window replaced. It is now going to cost me 89.00 dollars only.I'm a happy camper. These windows frames crack because they are plastic and the whole window has to be replaced. So be persistant, but be extremely nice about itand you will eventually find the right person that will help you. Go to the bodyshop manager at a Ford dealership and tell them you have talked to people who have had courtacy repairs done on their windows. And give them your best hard luck story.Good Luck.Hope this helps.
P.S. Dont ever go in on a Monday. Thursdays are always the best day of the week to approach people.Let me know how you make out please.bye for now...........Rod

I had the same problem. I looked up there and noticed that the window frame was cracked. I just plugged it full of silicone and haven't had any problems since.

>>>>Just recently had my rear slider replaced. Was leaking on the passenger side as well at 24,000 miles. I remember someone saying something about the frames cracking and they changed these to a different one in mid 99. My truck was made in early 99. Don't feel bad, the new Chevys have the same problem. Their rear sliders are leaking as well. A friend of mine is a parts dept. mananger at a dealer. He said GM has got to the point where they will replace it with an aftermarket window or replace it with a solid rear window and refund the owner the difference the slider cost them over the solid window. Because the sliders they have to replace them with are leaking again in no time.

>>>>Anyone have a leak in a 00 or 01 with a rear slider? Just curious.

Hey guys... I solved the problem for about $4.50. Buy some black expanding cauking and rig up a tube to go over the spout of the can (the one I bought came with one). The leak (on mine at least) is just a small hole on the passenger's side of the sliding window. Put the tube right between where the passenger's window meets the plastic frame of the slider. (Right where it starts to curve) Give her a little squirt and the problem is solved!

Thumbs up

Just got my truck back from service. They put a brand new rear slider in plus it has a 1 year/ 12,000 mile warranty on it. although they did not replace the "50 Years F150" sticker that came with my '98, O well.
Now just have to wait till the monsoons come to really test it for leaks.

Mine did the same thing, and I just went all the way around the outside of it with the silicone and smoothed it down, then I opened the window and cleaned out the track and everything that could have been in it, even though I didn't see anything in the track. I don't know which one it was, but it stopped leaking. Good luck!
