Talking Repair Kit in!!!

My dealer called me to let me know that my door repair kit is in repair "B" . The no crack repair. I was told that my truck will be the first one they have done. I sure will be glad to roll down my windows again.

I dropped mine off this morning for the 'preventative' repair. I'm still in the 3year warranty period. The TSB says 1.2 hours to glue the blocks in place. This will be a fairly cheap repair compared to repainting entire doors when a crack emerges.

Question

If the doors aren't cracked yet and you're out of warranty, can a private party get
the kit to do the repair themselves?
Also, how hard would it be to do the repair yourself?

I would think you could order the kit itself. It does have a part number. The TSB has the instructions in it you could follow them and do it yourself. My truck is at the dealer getting it done now let youy know how it goes.

Yea, I printed the TSB and took it to the parts dept. It was the first one they ordered. When the parts came in, I called the body shop and brought it in the next day. I didn't get the cost, but I'd suspect it would be around $50 (1.2 hours + parts). I'd bet a lot of shops will just do it under warranty. The TSB has instructions & pictures that didn't sound like it would be too hard to just do it yourself.

My '98 F-250LD 4x4 SC goes in Monday for passanger door retro-fix kit (no crack showing). If anyone has had this done already, I hope I hear from you before Monday. So far, the only things I've heard is to verify with the service tech, that your windows go up and down just fine, and to be sure they still do that, when you pick it up.

Frank
I got a repair order opened up with just 5 miles left on my 36,000 warranty. The drivers door was already replaced.

Did yours have a crack? If not, $438 sounds like a lot to glue a couple of blocks inside the door.

No both my doors were not cracked. I just have not been using the windows for over a year and half. I did seem to bee allot of money though for the repait.

Otherwise, can't tell anything was done. So hopefull I have a reinforced 'new' drivers door, and a now reinforced after 36,000+miles passanger door (which never showed a crack). My original drivers door had about a 1/4 inch crack.

I would think this "fix" should eliminate the flex in the outside door panel that occured without them. On mine, with no fix and a crack just appearing, if you open the door and look at the door handle, while opening and then closing the window fully, you "shouldn't" see any flex at all. Mine flexs a good 1/4" or more when the window "seats" itself in the upper runner.

Really pisses me off too. Can't roll down the damn windows until I get this fixed. Since the truck is out of warranty and I'm at least the second owner, I'm probably screwed. Checked the price from one Ford dealer and was quoted over $700 to have the "fix" applied to both doors and the crack fixed on the drivers door!!

I'm thinking of just getting the fix, so at least the crack won't get worse and then just deal with the crack on my own. I'm also kinda waiting to hear if this "wonder fix" from Ford will really stop the flexing.

Thanks for letting me vent......

Retro-Fix kit done to my trunk.

They did both doors! I was only expecting them to do the passanger door, cause my drivers was already replaced in Dec'00 by another dealer. The replacement door had a small recess where the crack normally shows up, so I figured, and so did that dealer, that this was due to some kind of 'fix' done to these doors. Perhaps they are from an '00 of '01 model? Don't know. Anyway, I don't think anyone can get their door replaced anymore, unless there's a 2" crack (per TSB).

So, anyone having the retro-fix be sure two things happen:
1) They should do BOTH doors, crack or no crack!
2) Be sure to tell them to validate that the windows go up and down just fine, before the do the work. I've read here somewhere, that maybe, the blocks could be placed off just a bit and hinder the windows smooth motion.

Otherwise, can't tell anything was done. So hopefull I have a reinforced 'new' drivers door, and a now reinforced after 36,000+miles passanger door (which never showed a crack). My original drivers door had about a 1/4 inch crack.

Frank
