Lightbulb door crack fix

This has probably been discussed already but I figured I would let people know. I had more door crack welded and fixed by the dealer about a month and a half ago It looked goog they did a good job. I knew it would not hold up but the shop mgr said it was worth a try but he did not think so either. About a week later the crack was back. I told him and he told me he would contact ford and see what they thought. I was just called yesterday and he told me Ford has agreed to replace the door with a new one for any customer who wants it done. But a fix is in the future in a few months. We both agreed that a new door would be a bigger problem. Because, 1 it too will crack, 2 mis colored paint, 3 not a proper fit and will probably have wind noise and water leaks. So I chose to wait for the fix then all there will be is one blended spot on the door instead of an entire umatched door. If you report your problem before warranty they have to fix it when you are out so get to your dealer now and report it. I would not opt for a new door, the best bet is to wait for some type of repair.
He did not give me any tsb or ssm #'s but he said ford is aknowledging the problem.

Good luck with your cracks.
Hopefully they will correct them soon.

Cool

Well, when the fix comes out, it will be a welded brace. Ford still has to finish durability testing on this though. They were going to use a plate with structural adhesive, but with all the stress, the adhesive failed. So now they have to perfect a way to weld a brace into the door without causing further damage. It will most likely use a mig welder and some sort of jig.

Thumbs up

kmmon1...

Thanks for the heads up! If you or anyone else finds out what this fix is in a few months..PLEASE let us all know!

I am intentionally not using my windows for the time being...I also do not want a weld or new door.

This door crack problem is the only real complaint I have about the new F-150...other than that..this truck is the best!

Sycoholic--

Sounds like every dealer is going to have a crap load of trucks to weld in the near future! Hopefully this will once and for all fix this problem.

Cool

They will sure be getting mine to get that plate welded in. I try not to use my windows at all, and have been pretty successful, but I almost cringe when somebody on the passenger side messes with the window. I have been thinking of pulling the fuse, but then you would have to explain why your power windows don't work on a brand new truck.

Clyde..

Try a search on this topic..if I am not mistaken..someone posted that FORD is replacing door skins regardless of mileage up to a certain point. I think you might still be covered.

Cool

Ford is only replacing door skins on immediate customer concerns for vehicles under warranty.

I have a 98 F-150 4x4. My door have also done this mine is not only on just one door. Both of my doors are cracked in exactly the same place, and length. When I took it in to the dealer they told me that they had never seen this. Then they gave me the "Your *******n'crazy treatment. They werent ever willing to check if there were any others like this. The unfortunate problem is that I am not the original owner of this truck. It is also over on miles to get warrenty work. So if there is someone who knows how to get them repaired by Ford after warr. please let me know.
Thank You, and look forward to visiting this site often now that I know that it is here.

My dealer offered to replace the entire door and that is what Ford told him to do. Not just the skin. So if you want the change go for the entire new door, dont have it reskinned. But my advice and opinion is to wait for the fix, just let Ford know you have the problem right away. Sycoholic should be able to get some SSM #'s or TSM #'s for anyone to give to there dealers so they can look it up, If they say they have never heard of the problem. And when in doubt give the people at the dealers this website and let them check it out. There was a voting box on this site at one time about heow many people have the crack.

Clyde or Others
Just off warranty last summer and now at 36000 mi. Found the infamous door crack on my drivers door
Anyone have sucess with ford covering the fix after warranty expiration???
Anyone have their door repaired with TSB fix using abs plastic/ glue fix?? does it work??

I personally dont believe tha abs plastic glue in stiffener will work. The two materials have different thermal expansion coeficcients and the glue lets go on temperature change
Thanks in Advance

Dave

Talking

I have a 97 F150 with 55000 miles and I just got 2 brand new doors 2 weeks ago.
This what I did;
1) I went to the dealer where I bought it.
2) Inspect the used trucks that they have
for sale.
3) Ask for the service Manager.
Explain to him that you have the cracks
doors and you found it in the internet
make sure to make copies of Special
Service# and you want to make An
appointment with the Ford Rep that goes
to the dealer once a weeks.
4) Show him your truck and if you saw
cracks on the used truck that they have
for sale let him know. That they selling
truck with defects.
One more thing
Good luck
It took 3 days to order mine doors
1 week to paint it and
I'm really happy
Thanks to F150online

I emailed Ford about the door crack issue. I told them I have owned 9 Ford pickups in my life and that I felt they were superior to the competition. I also told them that if they did not address the door crack issue that I would not be buying the tenth. I have a 99 F250 which is out of warranty, by the way. They called me yesterday and informed me that since I am out of warranty there would be no repair for me. Gee, thanks. Maybe those new Chevy's don't look so bad after all.
