Bluetooth Audio Installation Kit

Hi all,
I am new to this forum as I just recently purchased my '05 F150 XL SWB. Very sweet truck, I must say. I am a little worried about the threads discussing sub 15Mpg on the 4.2 engines, but that is for another forum.

This is in regards to the Motorola Bluetooth car adapter that I just got. I want to install this in my truck (obviously), but as I am new to the F150 family I wanted to get as much expertise advise before devising my installation plan.

Does anyone have experience installing one of these adapters before? I was thinking that it should just plug right into the AUX in the stock stereo. Anything that I need to know before I start ripping the dash apart would be much appreciated. Any special tools required?

Thanks for the help in advance everyone...

try this

Try this out:
http://www.fordgenuineaccessory.com/detail.asp?product_id=2903&GID=
It's designed mainly for Ford's branded bluetooth interface kit but with a little splicing I see no reason why it wouldn't work just as well with Motorola's.
I'm actually looking into doing the exact same thing in a month or so.

How about installation procedures?

Thanks much for the link. I had read about this previously. However I was looking for more a "how-to" section that gives step-by-step instructions on how to install into a F150 specifically.

Is there a previous post somewhere in this forum that describes how to install an aftermarket auxilary audio component to the stock F150 stereo?

Thanks again...

Ford Dealership sucks...

Ok. So I took my Motorola Bluetooth carkit into Best Buy for installation. They said that they couldnt integrate the kit into the AUX port on the factory stereo without another cable. They told me to go to the dealership to get it. So I stroll on down to my local Ford dealership and explain the situation. They had no idea what I was talking about. Actually I dont even think they new what Bluetooth is. So now I am up a creek.

Does anyone know of a way to install this bluetooth car kit with full integration into the stereo and automated mute when a call is received?

Thanks in advance.

I have the Motorola IHF1000 bluetooth kit on my '05 F-150 SCrew and used the Ford Handsfree Prep harness to hook the car kit to the radio's CANBus interface. You don't need the Aux adapter to get it to play through the radio since the prep harness and the Motorola wiring harness have the wires to connect to each other to connect to the radio. If you want mute and phone audio through the radio, you need the prep harness. The Motorola installation manual says to use either the included speaker or the two wires for audio to the radio, if yours has it, which it should being an '05.

Now, if you want the Aux interface to hook up an iPod or other MP3 player, go ahead, but I didn't need it for the radio. Something else that I noticed is that the radio doesn't have to be on for the handsfree audio to come through the radio (just power to the handsfree), and when the handsfree mutes the radio, it pauses the CD if you are playing a CD.

Oh yeah, with the Motorola kit, the iginition sense wire does need to be hooked up to work. I decided that it should be switched with the ignition (which the prep harness already does) since I didn't do it on my sister's Taurus, and the bluetooth sometimes will still detect the phone inside the house. I like the Motorola kit since the chrome buttons match the chrome AC vent rings on my XLT.

Here's a picture that isn't too good. I'll try to take a better picture with the bezel on and off so that you can see how it's wired.

You should be able to see the microphone above the A/C vent and the control panel for the hands free below the shifter to the left of the 4x4 selector switch.

This is a nice set up, now don't kill me for going slightly astray but you menitoned hooking the IPOD to the AUX jacks. The wife just bought me the new 30G IPOD Video, which is awesome by the way, and I was in a rush to listen to it in the truck but the cheap FM Modulator I got from Radio Shack is not cutting it. I have my XM Commander hooked to the attenna with a modulator but I was wondering how to hook the AUXto my IPOD. Special cable or just RCA plugs with a headphone jack on the other end? Did not want to rip it apart without the right parts....if you see another discussion about it let me know I had trouble finding one. Thanks.

Actually, if you look on the RH side of my picture, you will see a cord hanging over my cell phone power cord coming out of the 12V socket. It's a 1/8" stereo to 2 RCA cable that's hooked up to my PIE Aux adapter. Hopefully this weekend I will be able to pull the radio so that I can take a picture of the mess of cables behind my radio and AC controls. I need to do it so that y'all will see both the cell phone hands free prep harness and PIE are hooked inline with each other on the CANBus connector on the back of the radio.

Today I pulled off the front plate for the radio and I now undertand everything clearly. This should run me about $104 with everything including charger for the IPOD. The wife is a little made at the money the IPOD is now starting to cost us but I have to say it is worth it. I came up with another idea, once the PIE is installed I will do a splitter and add my XM into it so it sounds better but I will also add an extra headphone jack cord to the back end of my Lariats center console so I can plug in our portable DVD player we take on the plane with us or if anyone wants to plug in their IPOD from the back seat they have the option (probably tuck it down low so you can't see it). Once I do it I will put pictures on the web. Thanks for the help guys this is inspiring.

Hey jljue, really looking forward to those pics of your wiring. I am also looking at ordering the IHF1000 kit and the prep harness.
On a side note, how well does the kit work, how is the sound quality on both ends? Is it very noticable on the other end of the line that you are on hands free.
Also, I am not familiar with the pie aux wiring, but a sat radio may be in my near future as well. What do mean you have the pie adapter and the hands free kit wired inline? Did the motorola kit / hands free prep kit come with any wiring instructions?

Sound quality on my end is pretty good, but if I have the volume too loud on the radio, some people say that I sound like I'm in a bottle or they hear themselves echoing back. The PIE interface sounds wonderful with either my MP3 player or my pocket PC plugged in. The handsfree came with clear wiring directions, but the handsfree prep harness listed the wiring on a tag. Some of the wire colors will not match, so be careful.

OK, here are my pictures that you have been waiting for. I decided that since the outside temperature was in the 70's, it was a good time to pull the dash apart to turn up the gain on the PIE for the Samsung MP3 player since the volume defaults to 20 out of 40 whenever it's above 20.

Here's the setup:

A look at the PIE and the handsfree module under the radio while it's still mounted. I have them velcroed in since there wasn't a good way for me to drill the mounts at the time.

A better look at the plethora of wiring, but still doesn't show how everything is truely daisy-chained together. The handsfree prep harness comes out of the radio, then the PIE is plugged in after the handsfree prep harness. I did too good of a job zip-tying the wires in, and I didn't feel like undoing it. I'm sorry for being lazy.

Obviously, I have the non-Audiophile radio. I had nothing plugged into the small molex (CANBus) connector on the back before I bought the toys.

I'm sorry it took me so long. I'm finally getting to enjoy my holiday.
