killer system design

alright guys...as mentioned in the "what should I do first" thread...

here's a thread for the meeting of the minds to debate what the killer system should include. I would think in order to be realistic we should set a budget of say.....2000 dollars. (maybe 1500 is more realistic for some people)

anyways....how bout it? what do you guys recommend as far as comp speaks....amp...subs...etc... goes?

Thumbs up

This would be a matter of money, and personal preference really. The best you can afford usually is a good rule of thumb. Speakers are a matter of personal taste also. Moreso than amps I would venture to say. Go to a dealer, and listen to several brands in your price range to see what you like the best. As far as my preferences go MTX for amps, and infinity for door speakers. The subs I would have to say Audiobahn. I just replaced my bottom line Polk single ten with an AW1000Q, and it's a night and day difference. It reproduces bass notes much more accurately. For head units I would say anything from the Kenwood eXcelon series. My HU was recently stolen from my truck, and I replaced it with an eXcelon KDC-X569. Also a night and day difference from my old Kenwood unit. I'm hearing certain sounds in music that did not show up when played through the old HU. Good luck with your choices, go by your ear, and there's no way you can go wrong.,,,,98

OK.. $2000.. this is what I (as in my personal choices) would get.. what I I I would get.. not what YOU SHOULD get.

Headunit: Pioneer DEH-P7400MP ($250) or Kenwood KDC-X859 (this is last years model and still my favorite of the Kenwoods... $300 on ebay)

speakers: COMPONENT set.. not 6x8's PLEASE. CDT Audio HD-62 ($409 at www.thezeb.com) you don't need to replace back speakers.

Subs: 2 x Elemental Designs 10O.14 O-series 10" 4 ohm SVC. ($160 at www.edesignaudio.com) (it would have been 2 Audiomobile EVO 10's but they've gone out of business)

Amp for Speakers: Phoenix Gold Titanium TI400.2 ($400)

Amp for Subs: Elemental Deisgns NINe.1 (price presently unkown but probably in $450 range..?) OR far 2nd choice JBL BP1200.1 ($375)

TOTAL: $1804.. that leaves you $196 for installation materials.

HAPPY HUNTING.

Nice smart *** comment considering I stated my first choice would be the Audiomobile but that's not an option considering they're no longer available.

Alpine.. no thanks.

Alpine head units are not very attractive to me.. looks wise. They have nice features and all but they are ugly.. just MY OPINION.

Amps... once again IN MY OPINION there are better more powerful amps at a cheaper price.

Subs... Type R subs are not very truck friendly.. if you're cramped for space a 6" deep 10" subwoofer is not the way you want to go.

This is the single ten I have in the truck right now. It sounds as stout as it looks. As far as well made subs go, this one is definitely affordable and sounds good I have it in a slightly small universal Q-Logic .65 10" enclosure, and it still sounds great. Just a thought,,,,98

There is nothing wrong with Audiobahn subs, but the bottom of the line subs aren't that great...there is better out there for the money.

I know y'all are probably tired of hearing about Elemental Designs, but they have some of the best subs on the market & the prices are awesome (www.edesignaudio.com). They are designed for small boxes, which is a must for installation in our trucks. The NINE.1 is selling for $275 + shipping, but it won't be available for a month or two. Ok, I'm off of the ED soap box.

I really like the Pioneer DEH-7400MP, I have one in my truck. You can get one for $234 shipped from www.ikesound.com. It has a lot of really great features such as the SFEQ, built in crossovers (HPF/LPF), etc. You should also check out some of their newer models, they have the same features & are a little cheaper, but they don't have the OEL display.

If your looking for a high power amp, Better Audio has the M1600 for a pretty good price. You can check it out at www.betteraudio.com

Also check out Planet Audio, they aren't very popular but they make some killer amps. I owned a P850D & never had any problems what-so-ever...but I sold it to a friend of mine so I could buy the NINE.1.

It all depends on you as far as what a killer system is, because it all depends on the sound you are looking for. You could always do like half of the system owners out there and go with Rockford Fosgate amps & subs...its up to you.

I was basing my choices on what I WOULD GO with if I had $2000 to spend. Obviously, everyone's choices would be affected by what they like.. as far as looks, price, and performance.. what else is there to go by?

I wasn't knocking your Audiobahn sub.. I haven't had experience with them. I based my choice in sub on 1.. the Audiomobile I already have and I love it... and 2.. the Elemental Designs are being widely discussed and I've heard nothing but great things about them. Obviously, I don't have any experience with the new ED subs because they aren't even out yet but I DO want to try them. Audiomobile subs were only sold through internet orders direct from manufacturer (just like ED equipment).. so there's no other way to know about them except hear owner reviews and buy them yourself. I trust my instincts.. they haven't failed me yet.

The fact that 2Trucks1Wife suggests them every chance he gets (along with countless others).. and I've grown to know that he knows good audio equipment... I trust his judgement about the ED subs. Also, reading the specs and seeing how they match my EVO almost exactly (exceeding the EVO specs in some areas) I have no doubt they can perform incredibly.

I would go to walmart and buy the Road Gear cassette player, speakers, sub, and amp for the truck. You'd only pay like $200 for everything, and you could pocket the other $1800.

By the way, I'm seriously just kidding!!!!!!!

Hehehe! That's funny Actually both of my amps come from Wally world. I have infinity components, an eXcelon HU, and an Audiobahn
sub, but Jensen amps. I keep waiting for these low buck amps to die, but so far they've kept right on going with no problems. Most people are surprised when I show them the amps. I do that only AFTER they hear them though,,,,98

Yes, I do plan to go buy some "real" amps someday
